I had bonnet struts on my previous car (Seat Exeo) and they do make life a lot easier, to be honest I didn't realise what a PITA a non-strutted bonnet was until I went from that to my current Focus. The main benefit is if you're trying to lift and secure your bonnet one handed because you have something in your other hand (jug of water, screen wash, etc). I'm not sure about any specific installation issues on a MK4 but if it's an easy job, it's probably one that I'd consider at some point in the future. And while we're having this discussion - why on Earth couldn't Ford move the bonnet release lever to the drivers side with the steering wheel, pedals, etc when they converted the car for the UK market?!

Do you get one or two for the Mk4?  The main downside of the single aftermarket ones is that that they push one side of the bonnet up slightly making an annoying panel gap.  I would also expect them to warp the bonnet over a long period.  Obviously the pro is the ease of use.

The Golf bonnet release is fantastic after fighting with the Focus rods for the last few years...  The internal lever is on the drivers side, then there's a nice wide flat handle in the centre of the bonnet above the VW badge, then the bonnet shoots up on struts with no effort required...
