Is The New Powershift (TDCI) Based On VW's DSG? - Says The Dealership!

Featured Replies

Hey,

Just got back from a Ford dealership (UK) I was passing by hoping to see how much they would take for my 2013 S-Max 2.0 TDCI Powershift, which I recently had rebuilt with the Mechatronic for £2250 !!!

A 2016 Focus amongst others caught my eye and asked weather or not it was a manual, he said "no, its powershift" so I outright refused. He asked why, and I explained the horrors I've suffered over the last 14 months and that I'd never touch another Ford (semi)automatic... He said not to worry as the new powershifts from 2016 and up are actually VW's DSG units. I was pleasantly surprised and for the last few hours have been googling trying to find a shred of evidence to this fact. There is simply NO information indicating the internals of the newer powerhifts have anything to do with VW or DSG.

Can anyone confirm?

Cheers!

2016 focus 1.5 tdci and 2.0 tdci uses the powershift dct450 box , same as your s max.

That's extremely disappointing.... What about the new 2016+ S-Max's and Galaxy's? Do they all use the same DCT450?

And by same, are we talking IDENTICAL? or much more better built then the previous gen? I'm thinking maybe the guy there got it mixed up with another model.

I'm just furious they would go through the effort to make up such a lie! Its bizarre!

Same powershift essentially. Probably some minor alterations.

Powershift dropped with the introduction of the ecoblue 2.0tdci.

None of the new ford range uses either the dct250 or dct450 powershift as far as I'm aware. Gone back to torque converter auto box.

to some extent he was probably trying to help.... DSG is now mostly used (and quite rightly) as "a generic term in the motor industry" to describe a manual box with two clutches and automatic operation"

But in reality this is the acronym VAG created (Ford and Volvo dreamt up some joke meaningless crap called "Powershift").  They all work the same way, with two manual gearboxes with BOTH in one gear at the same time and two clutches stopping the argument and the wheels locking up... the automatic element is that the clutches and each (usually 3 speed) manual gearbox do things on their own.  The advantage is there is always direct 100% drive between the engine and gearbox when you are driving along.  Hence Dual Sequential Gearbox.  On a slushmatic auto they continually slip, driven down the road by a puddle of oil that at best is only 98% efficient, deteriorating all the way down to continuous slip when waiting at the lights.... (until a later idea with a TC lock up, that can cut in at times helping get back to 100% drive when its in operation)

when you say you spent 2k fixing, are you aware of global recalls with free clutches and gearboxes most other markets got? because we are pathetic at standing up for our rights ford UK did a dirty and only secretly extended it to a 5 year warranty, thus few ever knew and fewer got any decent resolution (like a new fault free box like the Aussie and US boys got )

Ford DSG came circa 2010 and had issues with crap clutch material, terrible software and an oil seal leaking on to the clutch.  These needed a new gearbox to cure a MANUFACTURING fault with the gearbox casing.

By 2014 the box was OK, but the updated software was still a joke and the upgraded clutch material still wasn't good enough

By July 2016 build all the faults in the box, the third generation of software / actuator and clutch material allegedly fixed it for good

As far as I know the "Mechatronic" is the term used by VAG to describe the terribly unreliable joke actuator THEY fitted to most of their early cars...

Unfortunately it seems all too common to find that sales staff (irrespective of make) seem to know very little about the technicalities of the vehicle they are selling (I thought they had product training), but their focus (no pun intended) seems to be on pushing whatever finance product they are incentivised to promote.

Thank goodness for forums such as this, if you need accurate unbiased information!😀

PS: on the original point about Ford using VW parts. They have of course co-operated in the past (eg original Galaxy) and will be doing so more in the future. VW are to licence Ford to use their MEB electric platform, and I believe the next Ranger/Amarok will be a joint project. Have also seen mention of a possible future Ka/Up on shared underpinnings. So shared  transmissions may well be a future possibility.
