Updating Sync using USB

Hi Everyone,

I am trying (and failing) to update Sync on my Ford Edge. This is my first attempt.   I have followed the instructions but on inputting the USB I received a message 'Bad installation file. 1 or more files being installed has not installed successfully'.  I have tried ringing my local Ford dealer, had various Chat sessions on the Ford UK site, but just end up getting passed from pillar to post with no answer.  I seem to have the relevant 3 files on the USB.  (All the help videos simply show that the download is unzipped to the USB and away you go).  Despite using Extract All to unzip the original download file, when I open the SyncMyRide folder 10 of the files therein remain zipped.  My guess is I need to unzip these files one by one as well. ??? However, I cannot get anyone to confirm this.   Can anyone out there help please.

The top level of your USB should have the SyncMyRide Folder and an autoinstall.lst file ...

All the files in SyncMyRide need to remain as ZIP files (something tlike this but your files will be different!) ...

The USB stick needs to be formatted as ExFAT (do that on your PC before putting the files on it).

The USB stick needs to be 32GB.

The instructions are on the Sync/Download page and there are loads of topics on this forum regarding updates (with loads of tips and help), so don't want to repeat all that again here!

Thanks for the replies everyone.

The top level of USB is exactly as described by Simon.  BUT, I must admit I have formatted the USB as FAT32 as per the instructions on the Download page. copied here

"If you need more assistance, your local Ford Dealer will be able to perform the update for you
(labour costs may apply).
Please download the file to your computer and prepare the USB flash drive as follows:
1. Please ensure your USB flash drive has a capacity of at least 2 GB
2. Please format the USB flash drive prior to the update to FAT/FAT32 format (no exFAT/no NTFS)"

So I will try again with the USB formatted as ExFAT.  My USB is 16gb - instructions say minimum of 2gb.

I'll have to check whether I have Sync2 or 3.  But, unfortunately, I think my WiFi is far too iffy to do it over the air.  What would happen if WiFi drops out mid update?

As far as i'm aware the sync 3 run on qnx blackberry software so is fairly good at sandboxing its updates normally downloads them fully then runs the update so if wifi drops shouldn't be an issue as for sync 2 if on windows not even sure if its got wifi on the sync 2 as the hardware is different not just software so you cant upgrade it without pulling the dash apart and major expense

sync 3 left sync 2 right

Thanks Aron.

Yes, I've got Sync2, so I don't think  WiFi is an option anyway.

I've just reformatted the USB to ExFAT and copied the files over, so I'll try it in the car tomorrow. I'll let you all know how I get on.

Thanks again for the helpful info.

Our Sync3 instructions say ExFAT, if your Sync2 says different then fair enough! Try the USB stick as is now you've reformatted it. It won't harm it.

One thing that some of us have come across is that the download we have been given is not always correct or for our version of Sync!!! If you copy and post the contents of your autoinstall.lst file, I'll tell you if you have the right format setup for Sync2.

Didn't think you could update sync 2 via the update website.

Thanks Everyone.

Simon, I can't open the autoinstall.lst file and it won't allow that file extn to be added to this reply. I'll try the reformatted USB this morning and see what happens.

Tried the reformatted USB.  Failed again with the same error message.  I'll try once more with a new download and FAT32 formatted USB.

Right click on it and Open With -> Notepad or copy and rename to autoinstall.txt then double click on it.

Then copy the text and paste it as text on here. Don't try and add it as an attachment!

Disable auto-off, on the vehicle settings, after you un check it and turn power off and back off, it will default back to checked
