Good Morning,

Im after some advice.

Recently had an Mot done, the car needed a new front tyre and tracking adjusted to pass.

After leaving the garage and within 5 miles the ESP light came on but turned off after turning the ignition on/off, this happened a few times but now the Light is constantly on.

Can anyone offer me some advice as the Garage has been extremely helpful but at this point haven’t been able to rectify it and I’m worried that I’m going to be hit with a big bill.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated

Thanks In Advance

Tracking isn't part of the MOT...

I guess it failed on tyre edgewear though, so needed a new tyre to pass, but they also did the tracking to stop it wrecking the new tyre quickly.

What fault did the garage find when they scanned it?  Steering angle sensor off since tracking maybe?  Or ABS sensor/wiring damaged?

Thanks for replying, the tyre was on the limit across the thread , sorry I should of added it had a service as well and they also had to adjust the hand brake  .. From what my wife told me the garage said it had two errors one relating to a sensor behind the steering wheel and one to do with a sensor near one of the wheels.

The sensor behind the steering wheel is the steering angle sensor.  That one should just need a simple reset after tracking.  ABS sensors near the wheels shouldn't have been affected, might just be coincidence but they'd need to do further diagnosis there.

Please Help...

The saga goes on and is now getting extremely stressful.

Following on from my previous post , the garage has now replaced the steering angle sensor , the light when out but the following morning it had returned....

I noticed that if I put pressure on the steering wheel with the column locking undone at about the  270 degree point  I could make the light stay off when putting the ignition off.

We returned the vehicle and they kept the vehicle for another 48hr telling us that there’s an issue with the dash board cluster, chystalised.... Even though it’s a SAS error , now I’ve just noticed when doing a test of the LED’s that the light for the ESP doesn’t illuminate.

Has anyone got and Ideas why we are getting the error, is there a set up procedure when replacing the Steering angle sensor ?

Could a faulty battery cause this?

Thanks in advance for any advice

who needs ESP? not all cars have it.  Annoying thing is though, if you have ESP and warning light is on then it's MOT failure. So ESP is a bit of a curse. But you've got your new MOT now anyway.

If this was my car, I would leave the ESP alone until nearer next MOT. You could spend loads getting it fixed now (and for what real benefit) and then something else major happen before the next MOT which makes the car uneconomic to fix (or stolen or whatever) and then any money spent on fixing the ESP now which you don't need anyway has been wasted.

I know that loads of people will not go along with my line of thinking on this.

And I am also aware that all new cars have to have ESP by law so some people will say that me suggesting that ESP is no real benefit is wrong, but I still say who needs it. It might help tame a few silly drivers in powerful cars and drivers who haven't yet realised that you need to adjust your driving style to differing road conditions. But in the pre-ESP days we didn't all go around crashing because we didn't have ESP.

Who needs ESP?

That one made me giggle.
