Engine Malfunction message - 2 litre petrol

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone might be able to give me some advice regarding a Mondeo I went to look at on Sunday.

I went to view a 2007 MK4 Ghia Mondeo and other than a few minor cosmetic issues, I noticed during the test drive that the message "Engine Malfunction" was displayed. There was no check engine light and it allowed me to clear the message. The car didn't seem to be suffering from any issues while I was driving it (to be honest it was a lot nicer to drive than my current car) and I would have bought the car there and then but the message has made me feel a bit uneasy.

I did notice that the car seemed to have been sitting for a while as it was covered in leaves and tree sap and it did struggle to start. It was also very low on fuel (surprised it didn't run out during the test drive). I'm trying to be optimistic thinking that these may have caused the message.

Any advice is appreciated. I'm not expecting anyone to break out their crystal balls but I'm not all that familiar with Fords and I'm just wondering if it may be spitting out a false message.

Yeah, as above, can't rely on crystal balls here, you need a (cheap as chips) code reader to see  what's up with it. And no, you won't get that msg if its low on fuel.

It COULD be egr, it COULD be something else too.
