MK3 Parasitic Drain

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2014 ford focus, when left overnight (9 hours max) the battery is draining to a point that the car will not start. Tested the battery and that is fine in its self and is charging fine when the car is running. Therefore something is drawing power when car is shutdown.

I took it to FORD reparation workshop, they told me that the radio is draining the battery so They have made the battery working only when the car is on (No possibility of switching on the radio if the car is not on, and that upset me a lot).

Once the solution implemented,I have put the car under test and left it off for about 36 hours and the car did not start, the battery was draining for sure.Yes it took more time but it is still draining.

Any hint how to help them figure out what to do.

Thanks Guys

One thing to do is basically ensure the car engine is off. Leave front passenger door open. Give it some time to switch everything off itself then put a multimeter across each fuse to see which is still powered up/using more than it should be in standby mode.

What do you mean by "multimeter across each fuse to see which is still powered up/using more than it should be in standby mode"?Any references?

Basically put a multimeter over each fuse and see which circuit is drawing power. Standby mode is when the car turns everything off apart from alarm, immobiliser and a very few electrical items such as clock...normally acheived when locking car or if you sit in the car and do nothing for about 10-15 mins.

Alot of the circuits are ignition live only. If you post up the voltage for each fuse, under above situ, we can help further.

Hi,

Did you sort out your Bluetooth/SYNC problem?

Here's a look for how to do a parasitic drain test with a multimeter across each fuse:

Here's a link for the millivolt to milli amp conversion charts for different fuse  types:

If you did solve your problem I'd be interested to know how as I think I have the same issue (61 reg mk3)
