Battery Light Stays On/Front Heated Windscreen

Featured Replies

I'm having trouble with this and feel lost. My battery died on me and the battery light came on. I've changed the battery and any fuses (thought they may have gone) but the light is still on. Does it need clearing from the ECU so it knows its not a problem?

Plus, when i try to turn on the front heated windscreen, it doesn't turn on either. Doesn't light up at all. Would that be a fuse issue as well?

I drive a Diesel Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI mk2 if that helps

Sounds like a problem with your alternator not charging. That might also explain why your old battery died. Have you tested the battery voltage with the engine running? If the alternator is working properly it should be around 14Volts. If the alternator is not charging properly I think the ECU will prevent the heated screen from being switched on because of the high current it takes.

the 1.8tdci has an unusual setup for the alternator pulley . the belt pulley is on a short shaft that then bolts to the alternator. my brother bought a replacement alternator for his 1.8tdci but when fitting it we found it was a knackered pulley that was the problem and not the alternator so we then bought the pulley/shaft 2nd hand on ebay. pulley has one way clutch in it, but the clutch had failed so the alternator shaft was turning much slower then the pulley.  this pic shows the setup. so don't buy alternator unless you have checked pulley first.  also check wires on alternator, it has the thick cable for the main charging current but also another plug with 2 or 3 thin wires in which can become brittel and break
