Led sidelights advice

Featured Replies

hi all, looking to swap my regular sidelights out for led ones any advice about where I could get some online I have a MK2 focus

thanks

Not sure where to get some but just make sure when you buy them that they are type approved, otherwise it's not legal.

And make sure that the LEDs are facing in the appropriate direction.

Some have LEDs facing to try an form a ball of light, some just sides, some just the front (away from the terminal area). Somebody fitted LEDs to the number plate lamps of my Galaxy, only had LED/ SMEDs facing away from the terminals, when the light output to the number plate is only side-wards, and the housing is black plastic so reflects virtually no light to the plate.

LED sides don't work on the Mk2.5, they're too close to the headlight lens and damage it.  That's if they last long enough to get hot...got fed up with a few faulty ones so settled for some normal Phillips Ice White 5W5s myself.

Unfortunately on this one I have to go against Tom here, although I agree as well. The 2.5 is a pain for bulbs for the sides, and most are utter garbage but I have found one (And only one!) Type which works fully with the 2.5 and with amazingly good results. Now of course I feel obliged to tell you it is off road/interior use only, as with most led lights, but Halfords actually have a cracking bulb that I use and have used extensively in the mk2, 2.5 and 3.5 as well as a 320d Tourer and a Corsa (sorry mods, strong language I know..). Its the 501 LED bulb listed here, and if you have a trade card they can be had fairly cheaply. Before they changed the rates they used to come in at 7.50, I think it's more on the 12.50 mark now but you get a 2 year fail guarantee which is a bonus! (It may be 5 but I can remember.)

I've only had one fail, and that was my own fault as it got left on for 19 hours when I was rewiring my boot and forgot the switch.. Still worked, just very very dim.

Anyways, here's mine in a private industrial complex..  I've had over 3 years daily out of the original set, and they're a pure 'proper' white. The camera is correcting for yellow so they look very blue here, and they're not dazzling either or glarey as the pic may imply. A very nice bulb that doesnt cook the lens..

But otherwise, as Tom says, it just doesn't happen for the 2.5s!

Thankyou all appreciate all the advice

Had These for more than a year in interior, side lights and rear number plate with no I'll effects and very bright.

Philips 127996000KX2 X-tremeVision LED W5W T10 6000K

lasted me 5 years. ! And very bright.

I have used this Ebay seller for both my previous Mercedes & now my Focus. Bulbs are excellent quality. Don't waste your time buying cheap Chinese stuff, they are more hassle, and good ones aren't big money anyway. I also changed out my glove box, courtesy light, and boot light at the same time, as the seller will make up a 'custom' set for your car...
