High Mileage Cars

My son recently bought a Focus TDCI, after having some initial problems which were fixed by the dealer the car is running ok, shame about the clicking rear brakes but thats another story.

So I have been having a look at some myself, my budget is fairly limited, to a max of £3000, most cars around that range are 2008/9/10, however some desirable models are a great price but high mileage, over 120K for instance, wondered what peoples thought's are on high mileage these days?

I say these days as when I was younger was always told to stay away from anything above 100K but is that still the case? Or do things like FSH make the world of difference?



I think if a  FSH  has been done most engines will run well for many years and miles☺️

As above, whilst some engines may be more unreliable than others, most will run for a long time if they've been looked after properly and serviced well.

In my younger days we stayed away from cars with 30k on the clock.

As to high mileage if bought a few mondeos with over 120 k on the clock these have gone onto over 175k it's not the engines it the suspension and electrics  that's normally the problem.

I guess it shows how times change in regards to a cars lifetime, I did wonder about the other components giving up beside the engine

Completely agree with this, I've had several high milers and tbh they've all felt thier age!  Never understood the 'feeks like a new car'.  The engine is the least of your worries with a high miler tbh.

 

As above, the engine, if properly serviced, is the least of your worries. Rust/corrosion along with suspension being the main issues. I've run some high mileage vehicles but always tried to do preventative measures to insure reliability. Fully under-sealing can help, but only if there's minimal corrosion. Fords are notorious for rusting sills front/back and also leaking in the rear boot can lead to hidden rust points in the boot and rear passenger area.

If you can do a lot of the repairs yourself or know a mate then they make a good case for buying. I ran a second hand 06 old Focus for several years myself putting a lot of mileage on it. The positive side is that Fords are easy/cheap to get parts and relatively modifiable in various ways if you so wished due to the numerous scrapped cars.
