Clicking Brakes

Featured Replies

Trying to sort out my sons brakes, bought the car from a dealer a couple of weeks ago, had problems with the injectors which were all replaced and I mentioned the rear brakes were clicking, they had a look, said they stripped them down, couldn't see anything wrong, put them back together and couldn't hear anything and they were right, I couldn't hear anything either for a day then the click is back. Contacted them back and they said they aren't covered under warranty 😕

Its a 2009 Focus, sound is from the rear brakes, sounds like a playing card in bicycle spokes(for those that can remember that) speed of the click increases or decreases with vehicle speed until you can't hear it after a certain speed. The sound will stop if you apply the brakes.

I have read that it could be cheap pads, but why would they click?

Either way its driving me mad, does anyone have any suggestions?

Could also be a warped disk. I beleive only 1 side has a piston to push the pad which in turn pulls the caliper to pull other pad onto the disk...when brake is released this pad sits a few mils off the disk...so if piston hasnt fully retracted then pad maybe touching and with speed and time will heat and seize on...with a warped disk this will make contact on every revolution of the wheel and could cause said clicking noise.

Take it for a drive then put hand near to see of there is any heat (excessive amounts will be binding brake and piston related)

The discs were brand new a couple of weeks ago but could well have been damaged somehow, I will give the car a drive but now you mention a warped disc, sometimes and it doesn't happen always but sometimes get like a sound, its hard to describe, like something being stuck on.

You should check the rubber bushings of the brake calipers for wear. The bushings slide onto the metal sliding pins and allow axial movement of the brake caliper. If the bushing are worn the brake pads can rattle against the brake discs. Especially when driving on bad roads this can result in a pretty loud clicking sound. Disassembly and regreasing of the sliding pins is usually a very temporary fix.

In extreme cases the mounting hole of the brake calipers (where the bushings are installed in) can become worn (oval). If this is the case replacement of the rubber bushings is usually only a temporary fix.

Thanks, I will check that out next week, going to get the car in the garage(my garage) and strip the brakes down again and see whats what, its not right, sometimes its clicking, sometimes it isn't, but I know that putting your foot even gently on the brakes makes the clicking immediately stop

Havent managed to sort the clicking brakes out yet but both offside tyres were really low on air, like 10psi, they were only pumped up to the correct pressure a week ago, take it down National Tyres, they had both off but said there are no leaks and no air escaping, a bit baffled by whats going on
