Mk3 1.6 TDCI Cold Start Blue Smoke and Rough Running

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Apologies if this question has been answered before but I've been googling for the last hour and not been able to find much of an answer.

I've picked up a 2011 Titanium X 1.6 TDCI, with about 129k miles through it, as my first car, absolutely love the thing to bits, fun little car to learn to drive in.

Anyways I've noticed blue smoke and uneven/rough running on a cold start. It settles down within about 3 or so minutes of driving which makes me think its not an absolutely massive issue with the car and we put about 500 miles of intense motorway driving when we got it to try catch a ferry without any issue.

So before I go off and drop cash I don't necessarily have around Christmas time on getting it looked at, would anybody have any ideas as to what the issue could be?

It's a while since I've had a diesel but from what's been said on this forum I'd say the most likely culprit is failed glowplugs. Apparently they're not just used for cold starting but also to help with the running until the engine has warmed up.
