A very confused first time Forder!

Featured Replies

Morning all!

I'm new to Ford's and am looking to buy a 1.6 tdci Focus Estate or Grand c-max.  I've read through a lot of posts about some of the issues with the 1.6 and have decided that my style and daily distance of driving will do it justice.  Here's my question - I'm after the Mk3 8V engine, but I'm slight confused as to what year to start looking for them?  Auto trader suggests, for example, that a Focus Estate on a 2013 is a 16V?  Are the 8Vs elusive?  What do I need to look for?

Thanks so much in advance for your help people!

Si.

The 1.6 TDCI in the MK3 is always the 8 Valve version. The older 16 Valve version was never used on the Focus MK3.

I strongly recommend to buy the 115 HP version of the 1.6 TDCI. This is by far the most reliable version because it does not have any of the systems to reduce emissions. These systems are known to cause problems (especially the additional fuel injector and glow plug needed for DPF regeneration).

Wonderful!  Thank you so much for the reply!  So what year were they produced and does the Cmax have the same engine too around that time?  I note that some are 113 bhp in listings.  I guess thats the one to look for?

are those ones ULEZ compatible?  I've seen 2010 ones where some are and others that are not.  As it will become a common standard in other major cities worth understanding....    And if they get road tax rules sorted out - the non ULEZ ones should be banned everywhere soon (5 years ago might have been a good start)

None of the diesels will be ULEZ passable in 2010.  Has to be Euro6 which came in towards the end of 2015.  Petrols only need to be Euro4 so maybe that's where the confusion is?

yes they do - go try autotrader - put in some REG numbers some pass others don't

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/check-your-vehicle-35896

why does this site put double line spacing everywhere and worse still then not let you alter it correctly (unless its thrown its teddies and magically allows you to edit - although that accidental fix has not worked for me for some 3 years)

Ah, I stand corrected.  It has to meet E6 emissions regs...but not actually be E6!

Minimum emission standards

Petrol: Euro 4
Diesel: Euro 6

The ULEZ is enforced based on the declared emissions of the vehicle rather than the age. However:

  • Petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after 2005, although cars that meet the standards have been available since 2001
  • Diesel cars that meet the standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after September 2015

Have you got the reg of a 2010 that does pass?  I'd assume it's only going to be the Econetic model with free tax that passes.  My previous 2012 1.6TDCi Focus doesn't (£30 tax), and neither does my 2012 Golf (£30 tax).  EDIT - Nope, even the poverty spec, slow Econetics don't pass ULEZ!  You're gonna have to provide me with some reg's that do before I'll believe it!

no I was looking a few months back - found two, one passed, one didn't

to narrow search I would only have looked for an auto, I know how to change gear - I just don't want to bother

I reckon it was probably listed wrong in all honesty and the reg was for a petrol instead.  They don't even put an auto box on the Mk3 1.6TDCi Focus.

Press shift+enter and it will put it on the next line. You'll struggle on a phone though.

That reg doesn't exist on any of the car checking apps/sites I know of.  59 plate would have been a MK2.5 anyway though.
