O/S Inner CV joint coming apart

Hey, so i'm just curious, is it normal for the inner CV joint to just come out of it's shoulder when it isn't under the pressure of an assembled hub?

When I took my suspension out a few months ago to replace a spring, when I took the shaft out of the hub and let it sit freely, the joint just fell out of it's shoulder, and all the bearings went everywhere and I proceeded to spend the next 4 hours rebuilding the bearing, but is this normal, in my past experience there has usually been a circlip or some come of mechanical locking mechanism to stop it just falling out, is mine missing or does the focus just not have that?
