Diesel wont start

Featured Replies

Dpf code came up took it for a run at 4000 revs. Car took over took it up to 5000 revs blew a load of smoke and stalled. Couldn't get it started. Got it towed. Oil had diesel in it so did oil change. Dpf light went out but car only slightly cranks. Any guesses? Ford focus 1.5 2015

Is timing belt ok? Check camshaft is turning when operating starter motor.

I'll have a look tomorrow thanks. The camshaft pulley was working but I didn't take the cover off to look at camshaft. Thank you

Diesel run-away. Usually where enough engine oil gets into the cylinders to burn, and the engine will then run even if the ECU cuts off the fuel. Rising oil level due to failed DPF regens is one cause, which stacks up with fuel found in the oil. Turbo failure is the other main cause, but this is not related to DPF problems.

However, the over-revving may have caused further damage, so making it harder to identify the original cause. The cure for diesel run-away is to immediately brake hard while staying in gear (do not touch the clutch), and eventually stall the engine as the car stops. Brakes in good condition can always over-ride the engine.

The very common Internet advice about long runs at 4000rpm is rubbish, I am sorry to say. It does not help in normal use, where the ECU performs active regens when needed. It is positively harmful in fault situations where the error light comes on. Passive regen is unlikely to cure any DPF problem, and may permanently damage the DPF if it contains a significant amount of soot, due to overheating. If the oil level has risen due to added fuel from failed regen attempts, then it is an absolute recipe for diesel run-away.

Sadly, if the engine is now stiff to turn over (slow cranking with a good battery & starter motor), then it sounds like it is badly damaged internally.
