1st & 2nd Gear ... Problems!

Hey all

It’s been a while!

The other morning, when attempting to select 1st of 2nd gear – the stick wouldn’t engage into 1st of 2nd.  I was however able to select 3, 4, 5 and reverse.

I attempted to pull off in 3rd, but doing so I was able to select 1st and 2nd gear again.

Also “now and again” if I’m stationary, and I push the clutch in, and select 1st – there is a minor crunch sound (or sometimes a slight clunk!).  It’s as if either the clutch is not being pushed in far enough (even though the pedal is pushed to the floor), to select/deselect the gear?  This issue is only problematic with 1st and 2nd gear - all other gears seem to be fine (I hope)

My thoughts are this.

A)      I need to get under the car, and check the gear level cable?  Does it need some copperslip on the ends, perhaps?

B)      The gear lever cable / selector is worn / stretched?

C)      The gear selector is on it’s way out?

D)      Other… lol (please discuss)

I’m keen to hear is any others have had this issue, and what the root cause of the problem was.

Many thanks.

(@Paramanic can you remind me of what we were speaking about via messenger?  The steps you took, etc. )

More likely to be syncromesh problems on the first two gears.

First and second gears are the synchro reason being as its a joint gear which only gets used by first and second. But to stay care free is to check linkage incase this has been loose. Keep car off go up and down gears will feel smooth. Then turn car on and do the same with clutch just touching it should crunch first and second showing the synchro has gone.

£65 oil
£200 gearbox delivered from eBay
Doing yourself £265

Paying someone ( my local gearbox specialist with a 5year warranty) is around £450ish

@Paramanic Been reading that the 140 gearbox has some slight mods made (for the increased torque).

If the box needs replacing, Might be worth exploring the option of 140 box?  After all mine has been remapped...

Only shorter gear ratio meaning Changing more, less mpg, a 0.1s faster (if you change fast enough) and the famous 2nd gear wont go near 70 anymore. They break just the same

D). It could be that the clutch slave cylinder on its way out.
If clutch slave was way out it would affect all gears

No, strange I know, but seems to affect low gears more than the higher ones. (can't remember if reverse also affected to same extent.) I've been through this so have 1st hand experience of it.

It's so frustrating, as it's not an issue that can be identified easily.  What's the best option is order to diagnose the fault - as it can be a number of things.

Also stopped at some traffic lights today, and couldn't get into 1st or 2nd gear.  Had to quickly push into 3rd, which struggled to pull off - and I was able to then select 1st gear.

Defo synchro..... You just described how your synchro wasn't working so couldnt get into gear, got upto speed to manually match the gear change and got into first
