Adding Cigarette lighters

Featured Replies

Hi all

I want to add an additional couple of lighter ports to run a heated seat, charge phone etc and want them ignition power on rather than always on (just in case I forget  to disconnect/turn anything off).

Whats the best way to achieve this please, can I take a new supply directly from the front interior fuse box using a fuse piggy back cable to a (preferably spare) ignition on fuse socket (if you know what number a spare that is ignition on and can let me know the number even better) - or is it best to tap into an existing feed somewhere and. if so, where's the easiest to get to?

Thanks a lot

You could use an 'add a fuse' on an existing circuit or an empty slot with power, as long as you use the correctly rated fuse to protect the new circuit. Preferably use an empty slot though.

The easiest option would be to get yourself a 12v extension with multiple sockets, then plug it in to the existing 12v socket in the center console.

Yes, I recommend rear window wiper as a switched live.. It makes no difference if you use an empty slot provided you install the piggy back fuse holder the correct way around. If it's the correct way around, the current being pulled by whatever you plug in will not go through the original fuse and only use the new fuse installed. If it's the wrong way, you will go through the existing fuse and the new fuse meaning you can blow both if something goes wrong (and kind of defeats the point).

This diagram explains it better. You want the 12v from the battery to be on the left side here. Doing it this way makes the circuits completely independent of each other.Image result for piggyback fuse holder diagram

Cheers all

So for anyone else wanting to do this, this is what I did:

Used the above piggy back fuse holder, couldn't find a spare switched live fuse on the board so I piggy backed with the rear wiper (Fuse 131 on mine)

Used two new cigarette lighters wired together and then took the positive cable under the gear gaiter and ran it down the passenger side panel to the fuse box, tucks away nice and neatly there 🙂

The negative went to a bolt underneath the centre consol and was nice and easy to place
