Crankshaft sensor

Featured Replies

Hi,

I need to replace the crankshaft sensor on my MK1 2004 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCI, but have read in the manual that I need to reposition the crankshaft to TDC.

Is it essential that I do this? What's happens if I don't? The sensor replacement seems just about manageable, but the repositioning bit seems a bit too much for my basic knowledge.

Also, if anyone knows of any decent videos guides out there, I'd very appreciative.

Thanks in advance.

Michael

I replaced 3 in the space of 2 weeks on my last Mk2.5 and didn't actually do a thing other than remove old and fit new, no issue at all for that. I'm unsure about the Mk1, but given the sensor just picks up pulses from magnetic areas on the inside its basically a 'dumb' system, I cant think why it would need to relearn, unless it's advised to be set to TDC for fitting purposes I.e. something opens up and 'unlocks' the sensor area or something to give more room.

Those cars are a lot less electronic so I cant think why that would be but would love a good answer to this one!

Hello @WireyWhenWet

Thanks for the reply. I managed to change it after being advised i didnt need to bother doing the repositioning. Still no joy the . Think i may have 2 issues running. I did a ful filter change too, so think it needs priming.

In doing this, if you see any issues be sure to double check the seals, it's very very easy to create a very small gap when installing new, which can cause issues with pruning and lumpy running as it introduces air into the lines.

100% agree, the rubber ring seal that sits near the top of the filter can be a bugger to get seated perfectly because it can move around 3-4 mm and if you don't get a perfect seal, the small amount of air it allows into the system causes chaos.
