Hi Guys,

Focus Mk2.5.  My Travel Pilot Fx has started playing up & I`m looking to upgrade. Has any one got one of these fitted & whats the verdict? No Dvd drive but not a problem.

I got the one that is more of a straight swap rather than a new fascia (I have the carbon fibre effect dash and didn't want to change). Mine also came with 4gb ram and a slightly better processor.

Very impressed with the unit just a few very very minor downsides.

The UI for the DAB sucks *****. You cant chose the order of your presets, you have to have them in the default order. Don't really use FM anymore as DAB has never cut out once for me. This is by far the biggest gripe for me.

Takes about a minute to get going each time you start the car. I just use it as a timer to let my car warm up and connect bluetooth etc. before setting off so not really an issue for me.

Google maps requires a separate sim card plugged into the radio to get the map updates. The offline maps only last so long. I don't really use it much so not really bothered.

The aux in your car stops working. I just use bluetooth but can be annoying if a mate wants to plug in to play music.

There's a setting that keeps the head unit in a low power sleep mode so it powers straight on when the car electrics are powered up (well within 4-5 seconds at least, I'm sure I've got mine set to the "Auto sleep" setting).  If needed I can always check when I leave work.

I've got a 26GB data allowance on my phone so I just have my phone enabled as a hotspot (Offline maps) so I still get traffic alerts and general app/Android play store updates.  I agree the DAB-Z is a little lacking in finesse and lacks features that you'd think would be obvious such as being able to change/resort the order the stations are displayed in.

I've got an Android 8 version for my MK2 Focus that I've had installed for nearly 18 months without any major issues, although it's a higher spec modal than the one you linked to, mines 8 core CPU, 4GB RAM and 32GB storage (or 64GB, I can't remember which I just know I never have to worry about running out of app storage!) 😁

I did initially have a lower spec unit fitted, it only had 1 GB of RAM and it was useless, it's the RAM amount more than anything else which makes or breaks performance.  Ideally you'd want 4GB but 2GB will probably still work decently, there's not a lot of bloatware running in the background taking up the available RAM so it'll likely still run acceptably but if you multitask you might find Android sometimes closes an app automatically if it's been sat in the background for a while (to free up more RAM).
