MK4 Focus. What DO you like?

Featured Replies

Lots of sometimes understandable topics and comments on this forum bemoaning the new Focus and some of the problems some owners have had with both the car and dealers, so I thought I would start a topic about what owners DO like about their cars.

How about a top 5 things you like about your car and maybe I will allow one dislike or frustration.

So to start.

2019 Ford Focus ST Line X 182 auto, 4,200 miles.

1.   Cabin layout, nice auto dial, infotainment screen, dials and general layout.

2.  Auto gearbox, manual mode and stearing shifters.  Also like the Ford Pass app which lets me start the car remotely so it is nice and warm when I get in.

3.  Drive modes (I have the 2 optional comfort modes) Sport is fun but thirsty, eco comfort is great for cruise control on longer journeys.

4.  Adaptive cruise control, perfect for the odd motorway run, I think it is quite impressive how it all slows down, keeps a suitable distance from the next vehicle, etc

5.  Looks.  I really like the sporty but subtle looks, slightly lowered, 18" wheels, red callipers.

-------------

And one frustration.

1. I have the odd rattle which can be irritating on some roads.

-------------

So over to you. What DO you like about your MK4?

I have the same as you, in magnetic gray, 4800 miles.  Like the blue of yours.

I'd agree with you on all of those.  The auto box is a bit slow going from D to R but on the move it is smooth and quick changes.  It's top gear is quite long for a petrol which makes for lower rpm relaxed high speed cruising.

I like that the interior feels quality and there's acres of cabin space, plenty of rear leg room.

I also like that it's not totally in your face styling.

What I like most is that finally Ford are putting high levels of kit in as standard.  It was often the case that they lagged behind other manufacturers in this.

As you, I like the looks and Adaptive Cruse control, If everything worked as it should it would be a stunning car. The only thing that is a design fault in my opinion is the rear spoiler/screen, why does the rear window get so dirty so quickly.

I now have a rattle on the dashboard, which is annoying, but goes away after having the heater on a while.

I have a 1.5 manual Petrol Titanium and the engine is first class. Very refined, plenty of power and surprisingly economical. I had a 1.0 new Fiesta Active courtesy car for 6 weeks and the difference in fuel consumption was only about 1 MPG doing the same journeys.

I agree about Sport mode. I normally switch to this as soon as I leave town and it seems to tighten up the steering also, although not as much as I would like it to. I never use Eco mode.

When I got the car I was devastated when Ford decided to change to tyre size for my model to 195 65 16, but now that winter is here and the roads are full of potholes I'm starting to feel a bit smug. The other bonus is that it is impossible to kerb the wheels because they are so high above kerb level. The handling is boringly safe but I would not try to race anyone with those tyres on my car.

I would have gone for the ST model for its great looks but there were some things that I did not like about it and some things that the Titanium had which I did like.

I absolutely love everything about my car from the point of view of road holding, comfort, heated seats, smoothness on the motorway. Its beautiful body shape and looks. I couldn’t be more pleased.

BUT

the software is full of bugs!!!!!Fix these and this would be my perfect car.

To put in model of car

Titanium X Estate Ecoboost 125

The main reason for buying was the cabin and boot space - these haven't disappointed. I bought mine used at 8 months old and so wasn't able to fine-tune the spec to my exact choices, I would have chosen the B&O option if I could have but the standard audio isn't all that bad to be honest. I also find the HUD to be useful when following sat nav instructions but turn it off when I'm not.

A couple of things that I miss from my previous car (SEAT Exeo - basically a rebadged Audi A4) are double-glazed side windows and a current gear indicator on the dash display.

Ford Focus Titanium 1.0 petrol Desert Island Blue 7,000 miles

I'm with Gillian on all of the above, I love the car I just wish they would sort out the software.

No wonder this vehicle has not been released in the US as they would be facing multiple class action lawsuits.

2019 1.5 Ecoblue Titanium in Black with privacy glass.

Initial review was quite poor compared to my old 2016 1.5 TDCi Titanium but now the car has covered 11,500 miles and seems to be improving all the time.

MPG is mid 50's

Performance quite good now in Sport mode

Best Brakes and steering I've ever had.

Just wish it was an auto

St line x 182 desert island blue 4000 miles

1. steering, best I’ve driven

2. 182 engine, plenty of power

3. Infotainment, now that I have it set up properly. Built in sat nav (one of the reasons I went for the X.)

4. Can’t believe I’m saying this but ..the app. Remote engine start on a cold mornings always good. Good for alerts too.

5. Auto Gearbox , can be a little hesitant at times but so are all automatics. Very pleased with it.

Dislike...mpg . At 27mpg today. At the petrol station far too often. The app shows me exactly how much it’s costing me. Not happy with that.

LIKE:

  • looks
  • handling
  • seats, comfort and heating
  • interior styling
  • upgraded BO sound system

DISLIKES:

  • SatNav - out of date and woeful traffic avoidance
  • interior rattles and weird vibrations
  • some of the interior device light indicators light when on other light when off!
  • intermittent nature of start/stop, hill assist, collision avoidance.
  • ultra thin paint, already have a fair few chips on the bonnet
  • interior engine noise, very intrusive at all speeds

Mk4 ST

Like-

1. Electronic LSD so no more torque steer on pulling away.

2. B&O sound system is crisp and clean.

3. Boot space far better than my 3.5 even with a higher floor due to factory sub.

4. Head up display is excellent.

5. Performance drive modes that actually do something more than just firming up the steering. (Throttle response sensitivity / suspension changes / rev matching on downshift / launch control).

(A cheeky 6. Engine sound is lovely and growly when giving the car some rice).

Not so happy-

1. Climate control buttons are small and fiddly to use unless you look at them which kind of detracts from the idea of a HUD.

2. Drinks like a hobo on sunday [emoji6].

I don't think you can really complain about a 280bhp petrol being a bit thirsty.  😁

I've been googling ways to disable the FENG, might be in Forscan before long.

Very true [emoji41]
Tbh, FENG doesn't bother me at all.

Thanks for this thread. I've got a new Focus on order (my first ever new car) and needed some positive vibes. 🥰

On the way: Black St Line X 182 auto with 11 options. March delivery. Wanted the ST but auto seems to have been cancelled. I'm in my 50's with bad knees so manual is a no go.

You have to remember people tend to go on forums to post problems and get help.  If you went off the internet you'd never even buy a Lexus. 😀

We've had a mk8 fiesta for 18 months and a MK4 focus for 8, we've had no issues.

Are you sure the st auto is cancelled or just not arrived yet?

Seen something on Forums about homologation issues. i.e. emisions. May come out towards the end of year, but the general view is that this is doubtful. If it does I'll give my wife the 182. LOL

1.5 ecoblue (Diesel) St Line X

Likes.

1. Looks

2. Handling

3. Comfort

4. Cabin Layout

5. Functions HUD display / Heated seats and Electronic Handbrake.

Dislikes

1. No memory on Electric Drivers seat or driving modes.

2. Fuel Economy is nowhere near as good as the Mk 3.

3. Rear parcel shelf too low when boot open.

4.Voice prompts for sat nav rubbish.

5. Condensation on windows in cold or wet weather. Worse if car has been stood for a few days.

100% with you on the paint, I'm worried it'll wash of in the rain it's that thin.  Would love to compare with other cars using one of those things they use at webuyanycar.

It is very loud, have to agree on that

Mine is so very quiet compared to the 2015. One of the things I really like. So that is strange. Mine does 50mpg around town and I’ve had 70mpg on a long run with a tail wind. That was exceptional. Usually about 68mpg on a run to Cornwall. 😃

I like the mk2.5

Likes

1. Cornering.  This car saved me from imminent death by simple sticking to the road.  When turning a corner there is so little roll and the front end just keeps level.  Had an Astra SRI 69 plate for 2 weeks and it has nothing on it where handling is concerned.

2.  It look beautiful especially in rain with sun out.

3. Engine makes if feel close to a hot hatch but this is also a dislike.

4. Space in cab, kids have lots of room even tho there is a full sized adult in front.

5. Heated seats and cab warms up quickly.

6. Lane assist and adaptive cruise control let's the car drive its self on motorways.

7. People heads still turning when I pass 🙂

Dislikes

1. Damn engine is just to slow for it's great handling but then will wheel spin like hell in 1st and 2nd when really pushing it.

2. sports mode does not give enough difference to engine performance from normal.  SRI put into sport seemed to make the turbo kick in instantly and you deffo feel the difference.

3. metal gear stick gets COLD in winter.

4. MPG isnt that good but I know this is partly due to my driving.  Average 25 in city and 50 motorway.

5. rattle from driver door if stereo is up loud.  wind down window and it stops.

6.  It doesnt have ther performance of the fiesta st even tho it's the same engine.

7. cant use maps when using android auto

8.  if turn car off then turn in readers light then open car, get out, lock car, light stays on.

I only used Android Auto then Apple Carplay for music streaming. I’ve ditched AA and Carplay . I now stream Apple Music thru Bluetooth and have full use of sync3 Ford Navigation etc. Can use Siri at same time too. Ford Navigations graphics are pretty crap compared to Google maps but all in all I prefer Ford Nav.

There is a definite difference in S mode on my auto.  Not only does it take the rpms higher but it holds the gear andd doesn't change up if you come off the throttle for a corner.

And I need to get someone to time it 0-60 as it definitely feels quicker than 8.5

May just be the old bum Dyno not reading right though 😀

I agree, I too use it this way.  The sync navigation got me all the way to poland from uk just fine.
