Focus 1.6 tdci Engine Malfunction

Featured Replies

Focus   1.6 tdci titanium , year :2010    126k  miles

it has had a recent oil change  and belts are done , no bad smells or noise and it seems to sound ok .

I was only going at lowish speed , not over 2000  revs

Going out this morning  in the cold but not freezing ,after a mile i got 'Engine Malfunction'  with a red triangle warning sign .

Have never had this warning before  and stopped after 3 miles of careful driving(was in rush hour) .

I started up again an hour later  and no problems .

any advice  appreciated ,guess i need  to garage it ,but  will any garage  have diagnostics or does it need to be ford  garage  ?

It will most likely need Ford diagnostics but you're best off getting Forscan yourself if you have a laptop or smartphone.

Most likely to be glowplugs, EGR or DPF related but could be anything really.

Thx Tom , i'm booked in for a diagnostic check tomorrow.

I guess the check  will cost you more then you could buy your own fault code reader for.

A good ELM327 fault code reader with a modification for extra functions for Ford will cost less than £20 including postage.

Use in connection with a windows laptop with free Forscan software on , or about £6 to buy Forscan app to use on android or Apple device.

Hi isetta, could you recommend a link to a good fault code reader? Thanks

Tunnelrat electronics. Recommended many many times on this forum. I have the usb one and WiFi one

I was nt charged for the diagnostic check. They said that  there  were  2 msgs

crank  sensor  and

fuel pressure .

i used it yesterday and did  50 miles on both motorway and stop/start driving , without any  messages,

but  went out later  with the engine cold and going uphill on the same stretch of road(as when i got the 1st msg)

and i got the same engine malfunction  message .

I did 2 miles and parked up at a shop , coming out 15 mins later  i drove home with no messages .

Fuel Filter, get it changed.

Fuel filter done last september , garage  thinks it may be a sensor problem , since the engine seems  to run ok , waiting to see  how it goes this week .

Car is still going well ..the message comes up  2/3 times per week , and always goes  off when car is  stopped and started .

i travelled  190  miles along the M4 (there and back)  and got  68mpg   for the trip.

i have had a  2nd opinion .

2  messages in memory   :

P0336  Crankshaft position sensor .

P2290  Injector actuation pressure  too low .

It is thought that these are false  alerts , since the engine is running well , starts ok  and has not stalled  and runs smoothly .i have not been over  2500 revs .

i am investigating replacing  the Fuel Pressure sensor .

Sorry i have nt updated this in a while..i cant easily find my  posts in here .

The car stalled in heavy traffic at low speed  and would not restart for 5 mins

I took it to the garage i usually use and he gave me  a number  for  a  mobile auto technician

..was now thinking it was the  maybe dash cluster  solders , he came within an hour  but  diagnozed

'low fuel pressure',and cluster was ok , he recommended i take it to a fuel injection specialist and named a company not far away

i booked it in there (with no problems in the 3 days that passed) ,and they could find no faults  but said that

they had tightened something up (just in case ).

I had gone to pick the car up on my bicycle

and got cold and soaked enroute  and was also so shocked to hear   they couldnt find a problem  and also  that there was no charge !!

they said they would leave my file open and to take it back  when/if  probs  came back.

..that i dont recall exactly what they tightened up and there was no  receipt.

This was about 3 weeks  ago and no repetitions ,except i had to replace a tyre and am now getting 'tyre pressure' warning

and the reset option   from the menu  has dissapeared, but i can live with that .

Put  a bit of  air  in one of my tyres and the 'tyre pressure' option on the menu came back ..no probs .
