Power steering fluid?

Featured Replies

Going to change the power steering fluid on my 2005 1.6 petrol did research said I need to use stuff labelled Mercon V

Went to local car shop asked for Mercon V they said never heard of it gave him my reg and he told me this is what is recommended MVCHF Central Hydraulic Fluid (CHF11S and CHF202). (See photo)

can I use this or do I need to find the Mercon V? Thanks

check the hand book & ford sell the right stuff

alternatively what's the car got in it?   black filth I expect, if looks green use that or red use ordinary stuff (green costs lots more)

if you have the oval radio mid 2007 you want green and that bottle you have a picture for is close to the right stuff might make steering seem a bit heavier - its green and not the old red ***** which you don't want on later cars

I don't know if ALL mk2s got green....

2005 is around the time the world moved to smaller reservoirs and green (or straw on a merc) fluid , seems some ford factories changes before others, green copes with abuse and higher temps better

I've used both green or red in the same car and a mix of the two....  no ill effects, but some suggest running the green in a system that had red causes seals to leak.... what I find is the silly clips on the PAS reservoir need swapping for jubilee clips, half the leaks come from the hoses weeping at the connection

also - all Mk2's suffer from the high pressure pipe snapping at the pump…. its normal, and later pipes get an extra bracket to help...

Thanks for reply and info Checked handbook (forgot all about it!) it says I should use fluid with the following specification-

WSS-M2C  204-A2

have checked the fluid I bought and can't see anything resembling this spec on the bottle? Do you think it's safe to go ahead with this fluid I've heard incorrect fluid can cause the pump to fail? The current fluid in the car is green and the stuff I bought is also green Thanks

anything is better than it running dry

using WSS-M2C  204-A2 ebay returns  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Ford-Green-Power-Steering-Fluid-1Ltr-1781003-Ford-Spec-WSS-M2C204-A2-New/143519843352?hash=item216a730418:g:O98AAOSwOHVeNvYZ   the green stuff

no the comma MVCHF stuff whilst almost that spec doesn't officially meet it which is why I said it'll add a bit of weight to the steering

the clue is in the word hydraulic fluid...   its better than using red.... but best idea it to go to the ford dealer and buy good spares..... though the crooks want 20 quid a bottle if you need it on the day.... or the link above if you'd rather have 5 quid in your pocket, or if you want old stock, 14 quid for the old style bottles
