Loud whining on start up? Then gets quieter?

Featured Replies

My 05 Focus petrol has 94000mls up i recently noticed a loud whining noise when I start the car first time in the morning it continues for about 30 minutes and gets louder when I press the accelerator but then after about an hour driving the whining sound decreases to just a really low whine from the engine bay hardly noticeable.

I thought it was something to do with the power steering fluid but surely the whine increasing when I press the accelerator has nothing to do with power steering but maybe I'm wrong? Thanks

does your car have power steering with a hydraulic pump driven by a rubber belt on the drivers side end of engine? if so then when the engine goes faster the belt goes faster and turns the pump faster. So there is a logic that the noise could be power steering and the level of noise linked to pressing accelerator.  Some cars have electric power steering pump, but if yours is petrol engine I think it has belt driven pump.  But also plenty of other things could cause a noise and be linked to engine speed
