Major Power steering issue

Featured Replies

Hi guys. I could really use some help. I have a 56 Ford Focus titanium(MK2) the mileage is fairly high at 121k. I recent had the power steering pump and pipe work replaced as the pump was completely knackered and leaking every where and also a leak from one of the pipes. I purchased the parts myself so I knew they were genuine and a friend(qualified mechanic) fitted it all for me(saving money). However 3 weeks after fitting the new pump and pipe work the power steering has gone again an another large leak has emerged emptying the reservoir but I’m not sure where from this time. also to add the drive belt has  Fraid with small notches taken out of it. What is causing this problem.

the main pipe into the pump uses a silly one time only quick release coupling (12 quid from ford....)  the pipe often fractures at this point ( a known failure on the early design pipes)

if you replaced the set of pipes you should get a later design... with a silly strengthening bracket right in the way of attaching them to the pump....

My guess is you didn't clip the pipe fully into the quick release coupling (it can be a difficult little bugger), if its that you might just get away with fitting it properly.... otherwise u have some fun as reusing the stupid connector causes leaks and getting it off so you can replace is another bit of fun u don't need

another point, when the reservoir hoses are a few years old and have been disturbed, the spring clips holding the hoses at the reservoir are no longer oil tight and it all drains out everywhere.... making it look like a bad leak... TWO jubilee clips stops the bottle running empty and pasting the car with what looks like a far bigger problem...

all in all a ***** design
