C-Max vibrating at speed

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm a new member, just joined today, in search of some advice. I've searched previous posts  and am wondering whether I've got the engine mount problem?

I have a 2004 1.8 petrol C-Max, which drives and runs beautifully, apart from a droning type of vibration when I get up to above 50mph. It goes immediately if I drop the clutch and release the accelerator, so seems to be coming directly from the engine. The engine mount seems to be a favourite place to start, but should it be rough at idle in that case?

Thanks

Gary

A small weakness in a mount that allows vibration at a specific RPM, (50mph in a certain, unspecified gear), will not need to cause rough idle, the RPM is very different, way off the resonance that causes a noticeable droning noise.

But there are quite a few other possible resonances also. Engine covers, wiring and connectors, pipes and hoses. If it is engine rpm related, it may be possible to replicate it on the driveway, by raising the engine to the same rpm.

A torque or power related resonance, like engine mounts or DMF, may require the engine to be under load (driving) to make it happen. This might help narrow it down.

Sorry, meant to reply before this!

Thanks for the reply, I should be able to spend some time on it this weekend, with another pair of hands, so will investigate this more thoroughly. Hopefully not a major problem
