Cracked Windscreen

Featured Replies

I have a Mark IV Focus Titanium X (2019 model). Had it now for approximately 4 weeks. Anyway, in my 3rd week my windscreen developed a crack. Nothing has hit the windscreen, there are no dents or marks, and the crack is smooth when I run my finger down it. It's therefore, as far as I'm concerned a stress crack which has developed through no fault of my own. Haven't driven the car since.

When I've taken this to my local Ford Dealership, I showed them the crack and they took photos. A couple of days later I rang them to be told 'as this is a stress crack, this is not covered under the warranty'. I asked them which part of the warranty they were referring to, and they couldn't tell me.

Does anyone have any idea where I stand on a claim under the warranty?

The Base Warranty in my Service Portfolio Book states that this covers any part of the vehicle  that requires a repair or a replacement within the warranty period as a result of a manufacturing defect, the part will be repaired or replaced free-of-charge by an Authorised Dealer. It also states 'Glass is covered by the Base Warranty for up to 1,500 km or 1000 miles'. There is nothing that states any particular glass part, so this must cover front and rear windows as well as the door glass.

I cannot see anything else in the Warranty regarding anything relating to glass damage.

I've done 988 miles, so I satisfy the above warranty mileage.

Is this worth pursuing with Ford? I'm not satisfied with what the dealership has said and need more details or documentary evidence to consider why they won't fix it.

Any assistance would be much appreciated 🙂

Ford do try to wriggle out of things, I was initially told my battery wasn't covered when it died prematurely but after a bit of perseverance they agreed to replace it FOC.  I'd keep pushing until they agree. There warranty states:

Every new vehicle benefits from a Ford Base Warranty that is operated through Ford Authorised Dealers. This warranty covers any part of the vehicle that requires repair or replacement as a result of a manufacturing defect. The part will be repaired or replaced completely free of charge by any Ford Authorised Dealer, regardless of any change of vehicle ownership during the warranty period.

make sure you don't do the extra 12 miles driving to and from the dealer!!  May be safer to take the bus for now!

TimJ - It's on the drive going nowhere!!!

You'll be fine, the Ford garage know about it and will know the mileage.  If you're concerned take a pic on your phone so you have a dated record.

The dealership where you bought it should honour the warrantee, if they continue to wash their hands of their responsibility my advice would be to tell them that if they don't fix it you will involve Trading Standards. Which way is the crack running, across or vertically? Windscreen cracking is normally due to stress which can be caused by rust in the pillar corners at the top of the A posts.

The crack starts at the bottom of the drivers side of the windscreen, and essentially then forms an arch going across the windscreen.

I'd put a couple of pics up, but it's not allowing me too!!

The description is enough, I have a picture in my mind. The way you describe the crack suggests to me, as I said, rust at the base of the screen in the corner where the pillar is attached to the A post. The only way you will know if this is the cause is when the screen has been removed. The dealer warrantee should cover it as it poses a structural issue plus Plod could pull you. It would be interesting to know weather the warrantee given was a Ford one or a third party one, the latter are usually difficult to claim off as they are not usually worth the paper they're printed on, it's easier to list what is covered rather than what's not as the list of what is, is usually pretty short but if as you say glass is covered then there should be no argument if it's there in black and white, it would be a matter of how the dealer chooses to interpret that, that is what you call wriggling. As for the mileage and the crack, if you haven't already done so, take a dated photo of your odometer showing the mileage/Km as the dealer could also wriggle on that point, did they take any photos of your odometer as well as the windscreen?, if not then they neglected part of their duty in affording you proof of sub mileage of the cut-off point, another possible wriggle. Ask to see the pictures they took of the screen, it would be very easy for them to 'loose' them! Sorry for rambling on but just trying to cover all bases. Keep nibbling away at them until you get some sort of  satisfactory result, don't take no for an answer and let them think you're a puppy dog, be a wolf, teeth bared and snarling. 😁😉

UPDATE - AFTER PERSEVERING FORD ARE NOW TO FIX MY WINDSCREEN UNDER THE WARRANTY 🙂

Well done, they do try it on, as I posted above I had same problem with my battery but like you I kept pushing and they did it in the end, I think they just hope folks will go away!

I’m still curious to know what caused it. Eg if it was stress on the screen due to flexing of the body might it happen again?

Well done getting Ford to pay out on warranty! Can’t say I’ve ever heard of anyone being successful with that.

When I had a 2013 Focus, a big chunk of paint about 4cm x 2cm flaked right off the front bumper. Put it to Ford for a warranty claim and they rejected it saying it was stone chip. I disputed it saying it clearly wasn’t stone chip, and that was obvious even from just the photos that they saw from the dealer. They stuck to their guns and I referred it to the ombudsman, but after a 12 week wait for the ombudsman response they came back saying I had referred it to the wrong ombudsman. I gave up at that point because I didn’t want to wait another 12 weeks, and just wanted rid of the car.
