Mk 7 fiesta timing belt cost and time/mileage due

Hi all.

I have a 2009 1.2 fiesta style plus with 71000 miles. I was was wondering two things, one, when should the cambelt be changed (time and mileage. As far as i'm aware it's got the factory timing belt still fitted) and two, given the water pump is driven off the auxiliary belt, is it recommended that the water pump be changed at the same time? Or leave it unless it is showing signs of wear ie bearings being noisy or signs of the water pump gasket leaking.

I've got a quote from my preferred local independent garage who have given me price for a cambelt change not including the water pump for £276 inc the vat. Is this price roughly in the right area for this job?

Ford state every 10 years or 100k miles so yours is definitely due to be changed. Got mine done at 93k as the water pump had started to whine due to a cheap replacement a previous owner had fitted just 2 years before. The water pump timing belt, auxiliary belt etc all come as a kit from Ford, I got mine for £130.38 including vat. Lucky enough my older brother is a mechanic at a vag specialist so he fitted it for me and didn't charge for fitting but it took him just over an hour to do as quite alot needs to be removed to get to it. ie, engine mount, altinator, covers etc. £276 seems abit much but all depends on the speed of the mechanic doing the job. My advice would be to supply the parts yourself then you just get the labour bill and can work out cheaper. I got my kit from Arnold Clark Ford in Shiremoor

If you supply parts yourself and a problem a few weeks later the fitter will say it’s the parts and not his problem. If the garage supplies parts and labour it’s their problem either way. So it’s a gamble. Just over an hour sounds quick for this job. I would expect this to normally take longer. But I don’t know how much it would cost.

It's not an hour of a job. There's not many cambelts that are providing you do a good job of course lol.

£275 isn't a million miles away from what I'd expect to pay although certainly wouldn't pay anymore. I'd be expecting a new aux belt thrown in though. If you trust them then I'd rather pay a few quid more and have it done by decent lads than save £50 and risk having it done by a bunch of cowboys.

I wouldn't advise supplying the parts yourself for the same reason as above. Some mechanics will refuse to even fit supplied parts for this reason too. They wont be genuine Ford, but I'm pretty sure Gates and SKF supply Ford anyway, so you're just paying for a Ford label on the belt instead of Gates.

I'd leave the waterpump personally unless it's showing signs of being knackered.

The garage I'll be using will be getting the parts themselves and i dont think it includes a water pump as thats driven from the auxiliary belt.

Well yes and no. The water pump casting includes the timing belt tensioner. I guess if you shop around you could buy a belt and tensioner pulley but its nice to put a new pump on every few years when you consider the work involved in removing a leaking one?

I had all mine done at a good local garage on my 1.6 Ti-vct around 2 years ago

I had the full Dayco Kit which is one of the best Brands out there,i had belt and water pump and the Dayco drive belt fitted for £360.

My invoice only showed 27971 miles but it was 8 years old so just got it done as i do very, very short journeys which puts strain on the belt more.

Showed me the belt he said it was ok but did show wear but the pump did have play.
