Where to start on my new purchase?

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

I am over in the states, but the US site is down and directed me over here.

Just bought a used 2014 Focus for a decent price with 82K miles, but after the deal was done and I handed the seller the money, He handed me a "Reclaimed Title", Said that it had had a collision in the passenger side and was written off by the insurance (front passenger door still has some long shallow dents, rear fender has a small amount of bondo work. So the story could be true). But I get no computer codes, got it licensed and insured with the VIN without problems, I do get a minimal amount of grind going into third gear, but no actual resistance through the shifter. And an occasional idiot light about a brake light being out when I brake, but the light is working as advertised. Also a tire is always saying it is low, even when it isn't, so I think it is just a bad sensor in the tire.

I have just recently become disabled and this is the first used vehicle that I have bought since the old 1982 Ford EXP that I had in my 20s. I am hoping that I didn't do to badly in the purchase. But other than replacing all the standard fluids, and having a mechanic go over it, what else should I be looking at?

Now, in the UK, if you were not told about that damage prior to the sale, that is illegal here, and you start proceedings for a refund. That is one dodgy seller you dealt with! With respect, it wasn't a 'decent' price if that history was not revealed to you...

Yes. Totally illegal in the UK. Are there no laws on that in the US?

maybe you can get it looked at by a reputable workshop as if it was written off after a side shunt there,  could be damage that you can’t see without proper inspection. It sounds like you are a person who will be relying on your car. Check your US rights and also get it checked  ASAP.
that is a terrible thing to do to somebody and the fact he gave it to you after the deal shows the seller knew it too.
if he’s already had the insurance money he’s benefitting twice. If he wasn’t insured it tells you something too.
i hope the car is sound when it is checked. I feel very bad for you.
🙁

I think even in the US it’s a legal requirement to make clear the salvage title when selling, although of course it probably varies state to state. Certainly all the guys on YouTube rebuilding salvage title cars talk about it like that.

I would suggest you can get it back to the dealer and get your money back, if he’s not keen then lawyer up.
