What's it worth?

Featured Replies

Hello all, I'm sadly having to part with my ST170 and I'd be very grateful for any advice on how much it may currently be worth, or what I should be asking for.

It's a 5 door, 52 plate, first registered 2003, MOT is about to expire, brake pipe corrosion noted on previous years advisory so will likely need looking at, the engine management light is on but this is possibly due to it not being run regularly enough, as opposed to a major fault. On top of these issues the bonnet release gave up this morning when attempting to install a freshly charged battery, the bodywork is ok, a few blemishes but nothing major, there's a slight colour mismatch with NSR door having replaced both rear doors when the others developed window winder issues.

When I purchased the car around 5yrs ago, I spent 1000's sorting out it's issues and turned it into a reliable daily runner and have receipts to show all the work that was done. Unfortunately, for several reasons, I've been unable to give it the attention it deserves and I'm gutted at the thought of selling. I honestly don't believe there to be any major issues with the car, it's a very strong and sturdy runner that needs a little TLC.

Please ask any questions if you have them and thanks for any advice available.

Would be worth finding out what the engine management light is for as that could either be a very small impact to value, or a massive one.

What's the mileage on it?

Always worth putting the reg in to we buy any car and seeing what they're saying about the price. Obviously they lowball a bit and also will knock stacks off it for all the issues noted above but it gives you a starting point. Don't put your real phone number in and then they can't get in touch to pester you.

Thanks for your reply and advice.

The mileage is just under 90k, under 5k done in last few years, hence my reasoning behind the management light fault but it's something i'll definately look at doing, once I get the bonnet opened and the battery put back in.

Thanks again.

Try we buy an my car or Evans Halshaw for a reasonable idea of value, but I would say anything around £1,500 if you’re lucky based on what’s for sale out there just now.

Whether you will be able to sell it for what it’s worth is maybe a different question. I know if I went to buy a car that has an engine light on I would probably walk away.

Best of luck anyway. Always a sad day selling a car but has to happen sometimes.

ST170's aren't worth much even when they are fully working, I would say £800 to a grand if your lucky.

At a rough guess I'd say advertise for £1500 and will probably get offers of around £1000-£1200 which are about right I'd say. The fact its low milage helps a little, but not if you can tell it's lived outside for its whole life.

That engine management light will knock the price down though. Unfortunately the "it just needs running down the motorway a few times" excuse doesn't wash with many. If it's such a cheap and easy fix you'd do it yourself.

Biggest turn off with 18 year old Fords are rust (mainly chassis corrosion).

Slight detour, and this might be teaching you to suck eggs here mate but the bonnet release on my Mk 2 broke too.  I had the garage remove the locking mechanism through the application of appropriate force, then ever-after I carried a 12-inch flat head screwdriver to poke through the old keyhole and engage with the mechanism further back under the bonnet.

Funny(ish) story - the night my Mk2 died I ended up calling breakdown rescue.  It was pitch black, and the guy arrived in the isolated lay-by where I was parked.  I decided that I should get out to greet him, and figuring he would want to open the bonnet, I got out of the car and approached him, carrying said screwdriver in my hand.  The guy sh*t himself - I hadn't really thought the whole thing through...

Hook  it up to forscan and see what codes it chucks you for the eml
