Martin222
I have just had my 3 year service on my 2017 Focus at the main dealership, however, I was told that the car has a powershift gearbox and that Ford have recommended that the oil and filter are changed on the 3 year service and it would cost over £400!!!!! I have now looked online and it appears there are problems with this box failing but I cannot find any detail of the type of box I have other than its and automatic. The garage also told me that if it failed a new box would be £5k for a replacement. How can I find out if I have one of these gearboxes, and if I have, do I need to pay out so much money for the gearbox oil and filter change. Botus
if its a powershift - its not an automatic, its two 3 speed manual gearboxes, two clutches and a robot pre june 2016 the gear boxes, the control module, the software and the clutch were dodgy - other countries had new stuff fitted free 5 k sounds about right they do cost stupid money, just pay up and be happy - in the scheme of modern motoring 400 is budget, 1500 is toppy and 5k fix on a 4k car unpleasant but increasingly a common issue lease hire - is the business model all manu went to in 2010 and increasingly design them to make you take this route (if you value your sanity / your money in your pocket) - approved used at 3 years is already near end of life expectancy. Some bits will do 25 years, others 15 years, but more and more elements die around 3 to 5 years, even when legislation means its supposed to be their issue till 6 years. But they are so big, so powerful and the governments are in bed with them, they just tell you where to go
Martin222
Thanks for your reply, much appreciated, are you saying that it is very likely that the box will fail in the near future? Do I have a powershift box, is there any way you know of to check if it is a powershift box? Also, I don't know if this would have any bearing but most of my driving is short trips to the shops and I am doing only about 4,000 miles a year. So long as was built after June 2016 its should be all good, but I'd follow advice of the garage and get the oil change done.... so you don't end up spending 5k on a fix in year 4 to 6 (coz u wanted to save money). DSG (usual acronym for a powershift box) hate to be stuck in traffic, the auto clutches can't cope and overheat. Its far better on later cars but u may see a warning on the display saying its getting hot and bothered. I had it on a Hyundai on the M5 last summer. Best thing is to park up and let traffic clear and or drop back and stop dead then trickle along at 10 mph, its the walking pace bit that kills them. Note the clutch set on these cars are silly money and hard to fit. I expect there's a procedure to follow, expensive oil, maybe a filter and with any luck they will reset the adaptions on the box so the clutches are happy and doing things right so they don't suffer excess wear. I'd ask them to check the software whilst they are doing a specialist job and charging that much. If they said this, they might be a decent garage that know what they are doing, all to easy to just do the engine oil, give u a free coffee and take the £250 and just let it break.... as for my other points.... German brands seem further down the road of make em die on purpose. With Japan at the opposite end. Sadly with Ford rapidly heading towards the German corner. If its a nice car, hasn't played up much and you like it... its a gamble... u might get 10 years with little cost or things like the the steering rack, ABS, radio or an ECU under the bonnet might just die in a thousand miles. DaveT70
If you're holding the car on a hill or in traffic, knock it into neutral
Dozz
You really need to know which powershift box you have fitted and that is dictated by what engine you have. Smaller engines used a dry clutch set up which seem to be a bit more problematic while the bigger engines used a wet clutch set up. The oil does need changing every 3 years don't skip on this step in the long run you will end up paying more. There are plenty of transmission places out there specialising in these gearboxes and repair costs will still make your eyes water but no where near 5k for repair. If you are handy with the spanners the oil change is doable and will cost you about 120 quid for oil and filter. I use my car for driving instruction. I've not had any issues with the box yet and car has just hit 70k. Mine is the wet clutch set up being a 2.0tdci 163bhp. I do knock it in to neutral if stopped at lights and I've never had a gearbox over temp warning.
JW1982
Since the oil that was primarily used for the Powershift gearboxes is also used on most modern manual shifted Ford gearboxes (like for example the 6-speed manual Ford B6 gearbox) this transmission oil became a lot more common and the price of this transmission oil dropped significantly. The oil needed for the Powershift gearboxes is not nearly as expensive as it was a few Years ago.
Dan Maclean
I have a 2013 Ford Mondeo automatic which has until this year given me trouble free motoring. However, in january this year, the first problem ocurred when the auto gearbox would not proceed from first gear. A local(non Ford) dealer repaired the problem which gave me no problems till october this year. From early october the same problem re-occurred three times when the gearbox would not advance from from first gear.. A fourth time occurred the same month after being serviced at a Ford dealership when they claimed that no fault presented itself in the diagnostic. I have now returned the car to the ford dealer for repair. A friend of mine claimed to have read on a website that problems with auto gearboxes are a common fault with ford cars and that there is usually a 10 year guarantee on auto gearboxes. Can anyone verify this or give information?
