Coronavirus-A More Serious Thread

To get away from the light-hearted posts, something that may well affect other folk in similar circumstances.

Mrs Turvey is employed by a local company to act as a School Transport Escort for vulnerable kids. The company, obviously, are contracted by the council for this service. All schools in Scotland and Wales are now being closed from Friday until, possibly, August! So does anyone know what her rights are regarding pay etc she'll not be entitled to SSP as she's not ill. 

I've no doubt her employers will do the right thing but it's going to be worrying for a lot of folks in the same type of situation.

She also cleans a couple of holiday chalets during the holiday season which is looking likely to be very poor this year with cancellations coming in already.

 

EDIT: Just announced, schools in England closing from Friday until further notice.

Schools been closed in Ireland the past week,

Kids are getting sent homework from teachers via a Microsoft office share point, 

Thankfully we bought a desktop computer for the kids last November as we both use android phones these days, lucky have the computer now for there homework

This is my new canteen in work,

I work in the pharmaceutical industry, I've cleared out of the locker room, brought my uniforms home, I now go from the car to my working position/ plant then back to the car for lunch breaks and to go home,

I have a tv tuner inside the boot panel which can pause and record, I plan to fit the aerials this weekend, I do miss my colleagues and the canteen but this is the new "normal"

Well over here all colleges schools and pubs aswell as nightclubs all closed, students where possible sent home from accommodation; I can only assume it to be much the same there 🤷‍♂️

I've always wanted one of those trays!

Unfortunately there's no let up for some of us - I still have to go to work and treat ill/sick people - but am seriously considering leaving all my uniform at work and changing before/after shift, whereas previously i'd only change at work if it was contaminated.

If you find yourself in financial difficulties and not earning you may be entitled to income credit, contact your area Work and Pensions office. They stuffed up claims and applications a while back but they've promised to sort themselves out now. If you are under contract, look at the written contract and see what it says about being laid off and pay, if it's not mentioned and you are laid off without pay then they could be breaking the contract.

This 95 year old grandmother has fully recovered from covid19 according to reports from Italy. Hopefully light at end of the tunnel.

Mate well done for posting this,i look after my dad at home and he is 91 and this is  good to see,my dad don't go out as he is in bed for the last 2 month so it's a good thing in one way and im mainly in 99% of the time and just have carers/nurses come round which are amazing and very,very good on hygiene with hand washing/sanitizer even coats and paper boards can't be brought into the house and gloves on and apron before they come into the bedroom, talking about the carers here.

Let's hope it get turned around soon, and we can all get back to a normal life but i do think 12 weeks as Boris says is way to short more like 4 months area i think.

As for pay im not 100% but im sure it says the Government will pay 80% of the wage up to £2500 a month and your firm can add the rest if there a nice firm.

Mrs Turvey's boss sent her a text yesterday saying that 1 of the 4 kids she escorts will be going to school for the foreseeable future so at least she'll be getting some work. 

 

I did see that 80% announcement yesterday so that will be a big help if it comes to that 👍

Where is all this money coming from?  How on earth can the gov't afford to pay out so much money at all, let alone at a time when production and exports are low!  Surely the country will be in huge amounts of debt by the end of the year that'll take years to pay off!

Yes i thought the same thing as all of a sudden they have millions to use where budgets its all cutbacks etc,even more cutbacks to pay the massive debt.

Let's hope this dam virus goes very soon, or we will all be in a bit of trouble as works can't survive.

Advice on another forum I visit says to wear a glove or use a paper towel wrapped around the pump handle when filling up the car..

There's always money in reserve for just such scenarios, even things like our gold stocks could be used I guess. I imagine all countries will be in similar debt scenarios, so we won't be the only ones.

I always use a glove when filling my car - Diesel stinks.

You have to be aware that even wearing gloves - you can still cross contaminate anything else. Guy earlier walking around the supermarket wearing gloves, touching the basket, touching his food items, touching the card terminal and his wallet. Gloves are great at stopping contamination of your hands, but aren't a magic bullet, you still need to wash / sanitize your hands.

Lol, I wouldn't be so sure. I was reading a detailed analysis of how the measures are being funded in the financial sections of the various papers. When you cut through the economics jargon, it's basically down to printing more money (or "quantitative easing" as a previous government labelled it).😀

I had a communication in the post yesterday outlining the rates of payments being offered to businesses and lower income earners and the bottom line is that the moneys allocated is a loan, it's not a gift, you have to pay it back so anyone that applies for and gets funding will be in deeper if they can't pay it back so there's another disaster waiting to happen.

Apparently, chlorine will kill this virus.

I'm so glad I'm salaried.
At least if I go sick I will still get paid, I'd just lose any weekend increments or shift premiums.

A lot of the shops in one town near me are only accepting card payments, no cash.

Plus it has to be plastic/rubber gloves...  I've seen several people in shops this week wearing woollen winter gloves...you know the type with gaping holes between each thread. 🤦‍♂️  And I wonder if they're washing them after each shopping trip...

Plus people wearing woodworking masks which won't have anywhere near the right sort of filtration level for a virus.  A little bit of knowledge can be a dangerous thing if people take more risks thinking they're protected like this.

On a lighter note, I never bother with gloves when filling, the car is always brimming with bacteria anyway so I just accept that's rank and do all my cleaning rituals when I get home.  However, I always seem to get a leaky pump and end up with diesel on my phone, wallet, steering wheel etc with a stench that doesn't clear for days!   I won't be buying fuel for a while now but will definitely use a glove next time.  I'll also try the Shell Fill & Go so I don't have to touch any cards, door handles, PIN machines and obviously don't have to stand in a queue or close to the poor till staff who are almost certainly going to get the virus!

Are we trying to make Hyperinflation a centennial occurrence?    In 50 years time school kids will be learning about the 2020's when everyone had to use wheelbarrows of money to pay for their avocado and hummus! 😮

Around here they were advising against cash but hadn't totally stopped it.  There will be loads of people that don't have or know how to use cards in shops.  And they'll be elderly, vulnerable, homeless etc.   My Great Aunt still goes to a physical bank to draw out notes to take to the supermarket...I've tried explaining she could save a lot of time by just using the card but she just tells me she's too old to change now (though I've heard that line for the last 10 years lol!).

I go to cash point probably once every 2 months or so to take out £100. But I guess I don't need that really with contactless now. I'm only a recent convert to contactless now my replacement credit card has it. 

Certainly can't remember when I went to a bank and still got cheque book from 2006.

I always use thick plastic gloves (medical grade) when I go to fill up my car. I keep them on when I go in and pay by card. I rarely use cash. 
I also use the same gloves on ATM/payment keypads if I have to use them.
Once I've used the gloves, I thoroughly sanitise my hands using antiviral sprays/wipes which are medical grade and used in hospitals, clinics etc. 

Wooly gloves are pointless because they'll just let germs etc through the holes anyway. 

Also, people going crazy for those hand gels are idiots. The hand gels are alcohol based and do not kill viruses like Covid-19. 

Now the UK government has stated not to go out and has closed bars, schools etc, you've got the flaming idiots rushing off to the seaside or the mountains which is causing even more issues and spreading it even more.
