SYNC 3 unable to update via USB

Iv tried without any luck to install updates to my SYNC 3 unit. The car is new to me and when I checked how up to date it was it said it hasn’t been updated since 2016.😐 
I tried to do it via WiFi but it didn’t appear to be moving at all for the 20 mins I tried it, then I followed the info on Ford website to do it via the USB. First attempt it came up with an error and then when I changed the format of the files on the USB it now says USB detected but nothing else happens 🤷‍♂️
any ideas of how to rectify this would be greatly received
