Discord

Afternoon 🙂

Not sure if it's been mentioned but what about a Discord server for Ford (and all car related topics)?

Would this be something the members would be interested in and that the admins would allow? I find I am on Discord much more then any website, happy to help run it if needs be!

Cheers

What is Discord?  I've seen it mentioned a few times lately but don't really understand how it works?

It's a chat + voice program.

https://discordapp.com/

It's free and quite useful. I run a Discord server for a YouTuber with about 7000 members on it and you meet some interesting people haha.

Oh, I don't do voice lol, I'll stick to forums myself!

No worries. Don't have to always do voice.

Most people just use it for text. But just curious 🙂

Cheers

As much as I like discord for some gaming groups I'm part of, I'm not sure if endorsing a closed off, private, non-searchable group, for the car club is a great idea.

The fact that helpful information is able to be indexed by search engines and found for new members to come and enjoy is part of what I like about this site.

There is no technical paywall, all the info is free to share and add to, all in one place.

For their input, as it's not my decision though, @Ford Owners' Club@Steve

I agree and disagree.

You have a point, I will still post something like "How do I change my timing belt" on forums, but I will not post a post  " look what I wound on ebay" https://www.ebay.co.uk/c/1953210139 ( do check tough)

It's just more of a chit chat, small quick questions at most.

100%, the option is there.

It is no way meant to "remove" the function of this Forum, you can't do that with a Discord server, it's just a more "chit chat" scenario. For topics such as how to etc, this will still be the place.

If Steve, or the club would like it, I am happy to give them the Discord ownership of the channel.

If members don't want it, so be it 🙂 Either way..

What makes any vibrant Forum worth being in is the chit chat and social to & fro.

I wouldn't want to be part of a club that just focuses on stuffy tech.

I'm sure that the majority of our loyal members here will feel the same.

I stand with Alex here, it's the club Admin's call but I'm pretty sure which way the vote will go.

If you wish to set up your own Discord community then all goodwill to you but please don't consider poaching from other clubs, if a Discord Forum is worthwhile then it will create it's own following.

Most definately not my intention to poach, I can assure you that. Seeing as this will ruffle too many feathers, I have deleted the discord server.

The admin can create one if the members wish. Apologies for offending anyone, certainly not my intention.

Mehh, it's a shame...

I really hope staff reconsiders and maybe explore discord option in some way. It was not meant to replace the forum but only supplement it. I find that a quick and easy chit chat is hard on the forums.

Forum is for discussion, discord for chit chat, you could then maybe add a chat to the forums maybe. I believe the staff are stuck in their old ways and shunned the Discord away without really understanding what it really is. As Stoney871 said "Discord Forum" indicates it, as it really is not a Forum you just could not even make it as a forum if you wanted to.

Just saying, give it a go maybe and see if you like the idea of it.

I use discord.... a lot. I’m an admin on a discord server. Just wasn’t sure if it was right for this club.

Maybe we could have a chat box on here?

Do I detect a personal atrack on accord of my syntax?
The club has it's own chat area and is accessible via Facebook and Tapatalk so adding another sub-access route to the club which would be more difficult to moderate due to reduced access from club staff (especially as I personally have no interest in creating a Discord account, just like I do not subscribe to Facebook).
Anyhow, continuing with the tried & tested does not indicate being 'stuck in our ways'.
With all dur respect, if you're not happy how we run THIS club then please do feel free (with absolutely no animosity or bad blood intended) to start your own.

After reading up more about Discord, no thanks, too many negatives, Ain't gonna happen.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discord_(software)

Disruptive use

Discord has had problems with hostile behaviour and abuse within chats, with some communities of chat servers being "raided" (the taking over of a server by a large number of users) by other communities.
This includes flooding with controversial topics related to race, religion, politics, and pornography.
Discord has stated that they have plans to implement changes that would "rid the platform of the issue".
To better protect its users and its services since these events, Discord has implemented a trust and safety team that is on call around the clock to monitor the servers and respond to reports.
This includes dealing with user harassment, servers that violate Discord's terms of service, and to protect servers from "raiding" and spamming by malicious users or bots. While they do not directly monitor messages, the trust and safety team can determine malicious activity from service use patterns and take appropriate steps, including more detailed investigation, to deal with the matter.
The service plans to expand this team as they continue to gain new users.

Controversial content

Discord gained popularity with the alt-right due to the client's supporting anonymity and privacy. Analyst Keegan Hankes from the Southern Poverty Law Center said "It's pretty unavoidable to be a leader in this [alt-right] movement without participating in Discord".
In early 2017, CEO Jason Citron stated Discord was aware of these groups and their servers.
Citron stated that servers found to be engaged in illegal activities or violations of the terms of service would be shut down, but would not disclose any examples.
Following the violent events that occurred during the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on August 12, 2017, it was found that Discord had been used to plan and organize the white nationalist rally. This included participation by Richard Spencer and Andrew Anglin, high-level figures in the movement. Discord responded by closing servers that supported the alt-right and far-right, and banning users who had participated.
Discord's executives condemned "white supremacy" and "neo-Nazism", and said that these groups "are not welcome on Discord".
Discord has worked with the Southern Poverty Law Center to identify hateful groups using Discord and ban those groups from the service.
Since then, several neo-***** and alt-right servers have been shut down by Discord, including those operated by neo-***** terrorist group Atomwaffen Division, Nordic Resistance Movement, Iron March, and European Domas.
In January 2018, The Daily Beast reported that it found several Discord servers that were specifically engaged in distributing revenge ***** and facilitating real-world harassment of the victims of these images and videos.
Such actions are against Discord's terms of service and Discord has shut down servers and banned users identified from these servers, but the ease of creating new accounts and servers allows such servers to continue to proliferate.
In July 2018, Discord updated its terms of service to ban drawn pornography with underaged subjects.
A social media movement subsequently criticized Discord for selectively allowing "cub" content, or underaged pornographic furry artwork, under the same guidelines.
Discord moderators held that "cub *****" was separate from lolicon and shotacon, being "allowable as long as it is tagged properly."
After numerous complaints from the community, Discord amended its community guidelines in February 2019 to include "non-humanoid animals and mythological creatures as long as they appear to be underage" in its list of disallowed categories, in addition to announcing periodic transparency reports to better communicate with users.
In March 2019, the media collective Unicorn Riot published the contents of a Discord server used by several members of the white nationalist group Identity Evropa who were also members of the United States Armed Forces.
