Better off with Tesco Momentum 99.

As with most good stuff, "not available in Northern Ireland..."

Yeah, I use PetrolPrices as well, as said earlier in the thread though, you have to keep an eye on the 'last updated' date, as it can often be 2 or 3 days out.

Sainsburys have now dropped to £1.10.9 for diesel here but BP is still at £1.18.9...though may have dropped further since.

Are you guys using pay at pump or mobile apps to pay now or still going into the Kiosk?  The revised £45 limit on contactless still won't be enough to pay for petrol instore annoyingly.

Haven't paid 'instore' for over a decade now, always at pump!

I've had my application in drawer now for over a year, the €90 odd price puts me off right now...

It's the hassle of going to the Irish Embassy in London that is the biggest hold-up for me.

Way off topic now so sorry, but if your wife has any relatives/friends left in Belfast, they can get an application form from their local Post Office and post it to you?

SO excuse my ignorance, I am new to the UK still haha. I have been told that if you pay at the pump it takes £99 from your card then refunds you the amount you don't use?

Now, I find this hard to believe but I have always paid at the cashier. So am I correct in saying that you pay at the pump AFTER filling your car, it doesn't have to take an amount off first and then let you start pumping?

Hard to believe because that is a load of cr*p!! You get charged for what you buy, just like any other consumer product!

You do know that article is 2 years old, and I never heard of that procedure! Obviously such a bad idea it must have been quietly dropped before there were mass riots on the street! LOL

Haha, I thought the same, it is 2 years old however, but it was clearly around.

Just thought I would be safer then sorry! Cheers for the app btw, 102p by me at Morrison.

Pay at pump takes a token £1 from your account as a placeholder then charges the full amount within 24-48 hours.

Interesting, never knew that - as a resident of Northern Ireland, I can do it all via post...

How do they know you have the funds?  I thought the same as Marc, £99 was ring-fenced and 'held' until the full payment had been taken?  That's how the BP app works.  Though you can choose the amount and the pump will cut off at that point.

Surely it's the same way that when you go into a supermarket (or any shop), and pay for your goods, the retailer has an agreement with the card company that purchases will be honoured, that is part of the handling fee that they pay...

When you go into a shop you physically wouldn't be allowed to leave without full payment of the goods.  There's nothing stopping you driving away from the petrol forecourt without paying though...  This is why the app payments make sure you have enough to cover it before unlocking the pump.  I've never used Pay at pump so don't have any experience to go on for that yet.

The vast majority of pumps with pay-at-the-pump capability will place a temporary hold on a certain amount of money, generally up to £99, in a customer's account following the use of a debit or credit card to make a purchase.
The pump must do this pre-authorization before allowing a customer to pump fuel to guarantee funds are available to pay for said fuel.
The length of time the funds are placed on hold, and are unavailable to the customer, is totally dependent on how fast the customer's bank processes the transaction.
Depending on the bank, it can take a few minutes to a few business days before the funds on hold are released.
While this amount is placed on hold, the customer could be penalized for insufficient funds when making other purchases on the same account.
(Source - Wikipedia)

As I said earlier, there is usually a £1 'placeholder' debit to mark your account, mainly so you have a visual reminder that you have a pump charge due prior to the balance being charged from the hold figure.
After the transaction is finalised then the remainder of the hold charge will be released back to your available credit.
