Painting prep bumper

Featured Replies

Hi . I've a silver bumper from a 2015 that I want to spray into a metallic blue.

The bumper has storage Mark's where it has rubbed some paint into the plastic , it also has some light scratches and bits of paint missing into the plastic .

What's best way to approach  this,  should I send down the scratches and ridges with 400. (Think it will take it into plastic) or.should I fill.with.a filler and sand with 400.

Do I take all the clear off the top.with 40o to adhere  adhesion.

After that do I use a etch primer  to prime the bare plastic then proceed to paint base , or will I need a primer .

Watched videos on YouTube ect but they dont have same problems  as mine .

An etch primer is only intended for use on metal to remove thin surface oxidation (not rust) and give better adhesion. For plastic you need a specific flexible plastic primer.

Ahh . That was jewel paints that said I need etch primer (I thought it was for metal).

Just need a good flexible  filler , and all I can see is 1k metallic  acrylic  base in spray can . And read that 2k top doesn't like  acrylic  case .

. Any decient  place that does 2k in can . Or should I just use a high gloss over acrylic

2 k doesn't come in a can 2 k is a two component paint, it's a paint you have to mix with a hardener.

Normally the brand of spray cans carries a clear lacquer just for the metallic spray paints.

2K spray paint is in fact available in spray cans for may Years.

2K spray cans have a sealed capsule inside the can that contains the harder. By pressing a button at the bottom of the can the capsule breaks and releases the harder into the base paint. After the harder is released into the paint and properly mixed (by shaking) most 2K spray cans can be used for about 4 to 8 Hours.

But wear a mask if using 2k it's very toxic. If the coat is already there it will be primed already so fill the scuffs with dolphin glaze, sand it smooth and level, scuff up the rest with dish pad to aid adhesion, degrease (important) will also remove dust, start with a light coat then build up until looking good (do not sand the base coat), make sure the can of clear is warm before use ( place in a bucket of warm water otherwise it will go white and ensure to dry properly before use) spray 3 to 4 coats making sure you get all edges otherwise it will peel, wait a few days then wet sand from 800 up to 3000, polish and wax.

Degrease first otherwise you'll be sanding dirt and grease into your paint surface

Thanks for replay , I have dolphin glaze .  So steps are.

Clean and.degrease (panel wipes)

Sand down any ridges with 80 grit.

Fill any scratches and holes or rough surfaces with dolphin glaze after giving it a 80 grit key .

Sand down.again then panel wipe.

400 grit the top coat to key it for.base coat.

Then clean again and tack rag , then lay  a top coat (3 litre coats ) .then tack tag again then lay 3 clear .

I cant find 2k basecoat I'm metallic  peal.

So.will need to be acrylic ..

What's best clear to.use with this .

Read reports that 2k clear doesnt  act well with 1k base .

What's best make ot
