Whistling when accelerating

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

New to the forum 👋

I've recently bought my first Ford - Focus MK2 1.6 TDCi and it's also my first diesel so getting used to that too.

In the last 2 weeks or so I've heard a whistling from the engine when accelerating, but only up to 2000RPM. After investigating I found the whistling was coming from the very front of the engine (presumably the turbo) and only happens for about 10 minutes after first starting the engine.

I've checked around the turbo and air filter and cant see any cracks/splits that would contribute to the whistling.

I did some reading online and found it could possibly be dirty/thick oil that is not lubricating correctly until it has warmed up and that's why it could be stopping after 10 minutes of running.

The car has done 90k and service history is minimal so defintely worth draining the oil and replacing along with the oil filter anyway.

Does anybody have any other suggestions on what this could be or has anybody had anything similar?

turbos can start to make nasty Noises before they fail

ACEA specifications - Check out A3 old fords vs C3 many later cars

A/B class for passengers car motor oils
C class catalyst compatible motor oils
E Class for heavy duty diesel engine oils

The classes are further divided into two categories HTHS blending engine wear and fuel efficiency and SAPS focusing on the importance of protection for post combustion clean up systems (particulate filters etc.)

A3 gives a higher HTHS than A5 oil, where A5 gets two of the Ford manufacturer recco specification approvals ! All very strange, quite a few forums suggest A5 is better for the engine than C3 but I don't think its the case.  For cold starts and additive longevity A5 might work, but for ultimate abuse its an inferior oil with C3 focusing high on the HTHS score and mid SAPS limits, thus is a better oil for most fitments

HTHS

SAPS (sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur).  A significant portion of a motor oil’s additive content. Sulfated ash is not added to oil; it is the result of additives in the oil burning and creating ash.  Additives that can produce ash are most commonly used for total base number (TBN), but also help in other areas, like antioxidancy, anti-wear, cleanliness and soot handling. Phosphorus provides anti-wear properties and further antioxidancy, while sulfur contributes antioxidancy, anti-wear properties and engine cleanliness)
