Swap Ford Head unit for the Sony version?

Featured Replies

Hi.

My son is scrapping his 56 reg Focus which has a Sony head unit in. My 55 reg Focus did have a Ford head unit in but my speakers were playing up and only working intermittently so I just removed the radio.

Since removing it the RAC were called out to my car as it wouldn't start and he found that a previous owner had work done and the main earth cable was not connected at all and the car was starting only on a very small earth cable under the air intake, with so much use the cable had finally burnt out (see photo). He reattached the main earth cable and made a new cable for the one burnt out.

I'm now wondering if that burnt out earth was the earth for the speakers and that's why they only worked intermittently?

Two questions, am I right about the small earth cable being for the speakers? Secondly can you swap the Ford unit for the Sony without any wiring changes?

One other thing that you might be able to help me with? My tailgate struts are not holding the tailgate up, is it easy to swap my sons for mine before it gets crushed and are the cars years of manufacture compatible with the same parts?

Many thanks.

David.

The radio and struts will swap over just fine.

Thanks.

Do you think the speakers may have been only working intermittently because of that frayed earth, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

The speaker wires don't go into the engine bay.

Could have been an intermittent disruption to the head unit because of the earth fault though.

Is it an easy job taking off the tailgate struts? I don't have a Haynes manual to guide me.

Just looked in his car and I can't seem to find any paperwork that mentions the radio code for his head unit. Before I remove it is there any way I can find this information out, possibly directly from Ford?

There is a label on the radio casing with a serial number which should start with a V.
A Ford dealership can produce the pin from that or alternatively search ebay for "ford v code".

Luckily found the radio code so that wasn't a problem in the end.

Because I'd cut my connector off my car a while back and just left the wires I had to take my sons head unit and connector and cut his wires too then crimp them all back in the same place in my car. Only issue I have is two smaller connectors, one white one black, that sit inside the main body of the radio connector, my sons from a 56 plate Zetec climate only have a couple of wires inserted but mine in my 55 plate Ghia has lots, see photos. I removed his two mini connectors from the main connector and left mine unattached until I find out if its OK to connect everything up again.

What do the two mini connectors control and why have I got more wiring going to them than him? Will I be OK putting them back together to the radio?

Also unfortunately the burnt out earth obviously had nothing to do with the speakers as I still have the same problem as when I got the car, all four main speakers are dead most of the time and only the drivers side tweeter works constantly with the passenger tweeter working occasionally. It's this an earthing problem? I know that all the speakers can come on and work perfectly so they're OK, it's just intermittent.

Thanks Stoney that's helped quite a bit.

My sons Zetec Climate was wired like the Fiesta in that link you sent although I don't remember seeing an Aux input in his glove box.

My Ghia seems to have those wires, although bizarrely I've definitely not got an audio socket in my glove box,  plus some it seems of I'm not mistaken for a sub woofer if I've got the wire positions right from the diagram.

As I know absolutely nothing about sound systems does the Ghia Focus have a sub woofer fitted and could a faulty one be the reason why I'm not getting sound from the four main speakers and only sound from the tweeter speakers? Well as I said before they come on intermittently so possibly a connection issue to the sub woofer if one is fitted.

Just playing around with the Sony head unit and found I can link my phone to it using Bluetooth but it won't play music from my phone or Spotify back through the head unit using Bluetooth. Is that how these units are set up?

there is NO Bluetooth inside the radio regardless of model.... its a separate module left of the glove box....  and you won't have the wiring to fit it

early ones did only phone calls, later module and later wiring did calls and music streaming

all do able but its involved

Ah right thanks.

Mine does the calls only then.

Just got my car back from my mechanic for a new front wheel bearing and for him to look at my speakers.

Got in after he dropped it outside and the speakers were working so I called and said thanks for repairing them, he said he hadn't. Strange how him working on my car has somehow brought the speakers back to life.

Had a last look at my sons car before it goes and it seems his glovebox is fitted with the aux in port, if the terminals was looking at is buff coloured and near the top. How easy would it be for me to take it out of his car and fit it in mine and how does it connect to the Sony radio? I assume rather than cut a hole in my glovebox it would be easier to just swap them, if the Ghia and Zetec ones are the same?

Any advice?

Glovebox liners should be the same, the Ghia one may have a pipe at the rear which is for turning the glovebox into a cooler tray but doesn't matter for swapping over.
The aux cable is plugged into the lower section of the quadlock as per this picture-

Thanks Stoney.

Now I've obviously cut my sons white connector block with the three wires and used mine wired onto my car which has more wires than his, see photos earlier, so I can't fathom what the wires in my aux block go to if I haven't got the actual port in my car in the glove box. Do I use his block and port or mine and somehow connect my existing wiring to his old port?

You need to populate pins 5, 6 & 11 on the white connector-

Blue/white to pin 5.

Black to pin 6.

Green/white to pin 11.

So the easiest way I assume would be to use his white connector with his glove box/aux port  reconnected in my car and disconnect my white connector and leave it hanging behind the head unit? I'm only worried about the extra wires I have inserted  at the factory in my white connector, do they control anything on a Ghia that he didn't have in his Zetec?

Eventually decided not to use my sons glove box aux in as I noticed on ebay you can get one that plugs directly into your phone with a 3.5mm audio jack attached to it.

Just fitted it and I noticed it made my steering wheel controls stop working but tbh i don't use them anyway.

go down a few and all the info is there
