Focus Mk3 2012 Kenwood Nav double din upgrade

Featured Replies

Hi, hoping someone with audio knowledge can advise. I have the Sony premium, 9 speaker system (doesn't have navigation) in my car presently.

Thinking of putting in a double din Kenwood DNX5180dab. The audio spec on it is 4x50watt.

1. Is the Kenwood audio output equal to, less than or more than the Sony in my car?

2. Will all the 9 speakers output sound if I install the Kenwood?

3. Will I lose functionality of the USB port in the centre armrest?

4. Anything else I should know?

Thanks for any help guys.

1. The High Level Focus MK3/MK3.5 audio system (including the Sony audio system) have a 4 x 50 Watt amplifier.

2. An aftermarket radio will only control the 4 woofers and tweeters (the original tweeters are connected in parallel with the woofers). The center speaker will only be controlled if the aftermarket radio has an additional output channel for a center speaker.

3. On the Focus MK3 the USB functionality is fully controlled by the Bluetooth/Voicecontrol or SYNC 1.0/1.1 module. When an aftermarket radio is installed the Bluetooth/Voicecontrol or SYNC 1.0/1.1 system including USB will no longer work. It is possible to rewire the original USB input to the aftermarket radio but this requires a custom made adapter cable.

4. Installing an aftermarket radio requires an adapter frame/fascia. Decent quality ones that contain a locking and hazard light switch are quite expensive. The major downside of installing an aftermarket 1-DIN or 2-DIN radio is that the original FCDIM (display) remains installed because it is needed for the PDC and Active Park Assist systems to work. Apart from this the FCDIM is basically useless and apart from the date/time and PDC/Active Park Assist information does not show anything. It is a matter of taste but in my opinion an adapter frame/fascia with an aftermarket 1-DIN or 2-DIN radio looks horrible in a Focus MK3/MK3.5.
