MK2 Timing Belt Change

Featured Replies

I usually do all maintenance on my cars but have never changed a timing belt. Now that I'm stuck at home for the foreseeable I'm considering giving it a go. It's not due for another 18 months or so but I hope to keep the car for a few more years yet so I might just try to get it done. The benefit of doing it now is if anything goes wrong during the process or if I don't have a part it won't affect me if it's off the road for a while. There is also a slight ticking noise at times which I'm worried might be the water pump?

2006 Mk2 1.4 Petrol

I've read a few bits on here about the process and I have a Haynes manual. I'd buy the specialist tools required (locking pins etc.). I've read that as timing belts go this one isn't the most complicated out there?

A couple of questions:

1. I've looked at the Gates kits. Are the water pumps that comes with these spurious kits okay? I've read both possitive and negative. I believe that they have plastic fins too which might be a no no.

2. Are the cam and crank bolts are supplied with Ford's Timing Belt kit? Can't see them in pictures.

3. Timing belt kit, water pump kit, aux belt, specialist tools, rocker cover gasket. Is there anything I'm missing from the potential shopping list?

If anyone has any guides to the process I would greatly appreciate it.
