I am afraid there are literally several hundred reasons for that to come on, and loads & loads of people have had this warning for all sorts of different causes.

You need to get some diagnostics out of the car. They will be there while the light is on. Forscan is a Ford specific system that is not expensive and is very comprehensive, but many other systems are also available. The codes that these systems can read out will help narrow the problem down. But, and it is quite a big "but", the codes are not 100% trustable, and can be a little misleading. The software is not perfect. However with no codes you are hunting a needle in a haystack in pitch darkness. With codes it is more like a needle in a small handful of hay, with torch light to see by. A big improvement, but it still needs some old fashioned diagnostic work in many cases.

If there is no codes and the car still runs normal then you may have a faulty instrument cluster which is common.
