Help on clear coat needed

Featured Replies

Hi guys . Just painted my front bumper with 3 cans of metallic  blue , I let it dry for 15 then shot it with 1 can of spraymax 2k clear . Gave it a few or 3 good coats.till dam can sputtered.

So I've let it dry for 24 hrs and it doesnt look shiny .

Would sanding and buffing bring this up or if I havent put enough clear.on can I gray scotch bright it then shoot another can of 2k over it or 2 cans of 2k air harden

Anyone,?

The first and last pictures are a bit blurry and aren't really clear what's going on.

The middle one isn't the best quality, but it seems as if your sanding scratches have shown through to the top coat?

By all means try wet sanding and buffing a small area after another day or so has passed and see if you're happy with the results. If you've got really thick coats on, you should be able to sand and buff a fair bit if you can be bothered. Sometimes the finish is just so orange-peely or dull that it can't be saved.

Spraying lacquer is all about technique. Were you doing wet coats each time?

What was the temperature like when you were spraying?

There's a whole other host of questions I could ask here

Hi .  The temp.was around 17 degrees.

It's not sanding scratches,  it's when the can spluttered and blobs went on bumper and  it dried to this orange peel finish .

I didnt keep a constant wet line with the way bumper was sitting .

Could I scuff up with 400 or 600 and put another can of 2k on or 2 cans ok hd body 2k

If you scuff it and it touches the base then you will have to start again. I would go with a higher grade like 800 or 1000 and slowly wet sand it until the patch is clear then dry it off making sure there is no dust and the clears warmed up in a bucket of warm water and slap another clear on top and let it dry then do 800 up to 3000 wet sand for clarity once fully dry. Then leave for 24 hours and do a compound, polish and wax. Meguiars is good but expensive. Results with my mk2 bonnet lip...

The next step after spraying and lacquering is do a full pass with some good cutting compound and ideally a DA or orbital with a good pad, itll buff right up like a mirror then following a polish! It just needs finishing that's all, if you do have orange peel and splatters, etc. If they're near the top and not deep into the laquer theyll cut out with the compound and polish nicely.

As long as you got a decent number of light layers down all should be good to go; you can't really go wrong with adding more but the more you add, sod's law says you'll end up with a fly on that last coat or something daft!

Generally 5-8 coats is what I've used for 2k before now with aerosol, but I use on of the slightly better 'workshop' type nozzles that comes on the Simoniz (and some Halfords?) cans for better and finer distribution

Mine was similar and I also had orange peel.

Wet sanded the clear coat a bit until smooth and then used meguirs :)

If you already have a clear coat applied, I’d wet sand with a really high grit to scuff it up and smooth it out and then cut in with polish to give it back it’s shine. This is what mine looks like after that exact same process and this is spirit blue paint. Needs one more pass with polish I think 5b16a6cb4581e4724a60b18b81520963.jpg
