Driver's window not working - Regulator?

Featured Replies

The window on the driver's side has stopped working.

There has been no prior warning signs such as any mechanical noises like grating or excessive whirring and the movement of the window itself was fine until it stopped.

The switch on the driver's side for the passenger window works fine.

With the ignition on and pressing the switch for the driver's window, I hear a short clicking sound behind the switch itself.

Does this indicate the issue or is it too early to tell? Is there a way of testing the electrical side before I have to take the whole panel off to access the motor etc?

I don't particularly want to buy a new window motor only to find out that's not the problem! Should I buy a new switch first? It seems the regulator itself is part of the switch.

Thanks very much.

I've had my share of issues with window switch faults, all so far have been with the mk2 and mk2.5s, and all have been the same issue - Water gets in when the windows are down and it's raining, handout sweeps between the buttons and corrodes the switch ir the circuit a bit. It's really easy to actually take the board out with basic tools, and you could try rescue it with a toothbrush and some liquid that dries nicely such as alcohol. I imagine hearing the click would imply the switch is good though but it's worth a look for the 15-20mins itll take to have a peek at it. It might even be a loose contact on the board that isn't making the signal to send the window up, but is registering that the motor is there so the motor knows to do something, but no idea what..

I had mk1 focus. One day drivers window was stuck closed. I could tell it was getting current as when I pressed the button the handbrake light would dim very slightly. Took it all apart, taking motor out of door and dismantling it. Never found anything wrong, put it all back together and it worked fine for years after that. Don't know why it was doing it.

On yours I wonder if it might be the same thing but the click being some kind of overload cut out that my mk1 focus perhaps did not have as older and more basic.

I think your are going to have to get the door inner panel off and investigate further, eg try the motor when it's unmounted from the strain of the window. But I wouldn't buy anything before you have investigated.

Thanks for all your help.

Just to give you an update. I've used a test light to confirm there's power going to the motor although I've yet to use my multi-meter to see how many volts.

It's starting to look like it's the motor that's the issue.

That said, even though it seems I can't purchase the motor by itself, can I just replace the existing motor without replacing all the other stuff that comes with it?

Final update:

Bought a whole new contraption with motor that comes with a 2 year guarantee for £32.90 on eBay.

Arrived quickly and fitted it with no fuss - It was the motor, all now working now....phew!

The automatic windows on my Camry occasionally get stuck. So far the solution is wait 10 minutes & try again.
