Ford Focus MK2.5 Power Steering Issue

Featured Replies

Hi fellow Ford owners,

I have just replaced the power steering fluid in my car, with fluid recommended by Ford.

After taking out the old black fluid out and topping it up with the new green fluid, the steering randomly vibrates when I turn the steering wheel and has a gentle stiffness.

If anyone has any insights to this, it would be much appreciated?

Thanks.

I have ordered the following power-steering fluid:

what fluid did you use? and how did you swap it..... if you drained it out might have some air, if you go lock to lock with the engine running it will likely come out.  never hold on full lock its very bad for any PAS system

not all fluid is created equal, I guess there's about 1.2 litre of fluid in the rack the pipe and the reservoir, you want the whole thing running ford green...   if u still have issues you'll need to check things out more

just had another thought,

is the drive belt and pulley's OK, if contaminated or falling apart you may get intermittent drive on the PAS pump

these belts are stretch belts - so there no tensioning you can do, its a stretch fit and that's it

Also remove the cap and place rag around the hole area to catch any spill and start the engine and turn the steering from lock to lock several times that should purge out the air.

Hi Gents,

Thanks for responding.

@Botus I used a Turkey Baster to take out the old liquid, and turned the steering wheel gently to get the remainder out. Following this, I poured the recommended green Ford liquid in and removed it, to wash it out to the best of my ability. Then I just proceeded to top up with the liquid, just below the maximum. I've also recently had a full service, where the belts and water pump has been changed.

@F0CUE Thanks, will give that a try.

Regards,
Abu
