the other day not touched the Mk 2.5 focus for about 4 weeks.  And the car would NOT respond to the remote to lock or unlock at all.  I didn't think the battery was the issue.  Unlocked the car using the key, put the key in the ignition and turned to ign on, waited a few seconds could see all the dash was lit up OK.  Took the key out, central locking now worked to lock / unlock with usual speed and clunk of operation.  About an hour later went to drive the car, it cranked with usual vigour (good battery just over 1 year old) and it started almost immediately.

So I guess it can go to sleep properly after a long period ???

This is normal. Same thing happened to me with my Mk3 and caught me by surprise. You should find a reference to it in the User Manual.
