Autobeam LED’s staying on

Featured Replies

Does anyone know why my LED brake lights from Autobeam are staying faintly lit, regardless of whether the engine is running or not. They do turn off after about 15 mins, but not sure why they’re staying on?

Are they CANBUS friendly?

They should be, their other stuff I have has no such issues and is labelled CANBUS friendly. This is the page for them:

https://autobeam.co.uk/products/382-rear?_pos=8&_sid=cf4516f66&_ss=r

I was told I needed the 382’s as I have the LED taillights and the standard 380’s didn’t fit.

Sounds like they are using resistors/capacitors to fool the canbus in to thinking it’s a normal bulb. I’ve seen it sometimes where these bulbs will hold a slight bit off charge and this can cause the LEDS to glow very dim when whilst the remaining voltage is drained from the capacitor in the actual bulb. It’s nothing to worry about, I can only assume they’ve changed the design to off how the LEDS work to Pro long life expectancy of the LED unit.

It would be annoying though but for the sake of better lights.

Totally agree, it does look strange, but I guess the pros outweigh the cons.

I’d send them back for a replacement set just to put your mind at rest. You never know, could be a faulty batch. It is very rare that happens with LEDS.

I replaced my interior lights in my old car with led.  They also stayed on all the time but dim,

I think it's something to do with them always running a voltage although small.

They do turn completely off after around 10 mins of non use, might contact their support and see what they say.

Probs a good idea. Do you have anything running that's abnormal like a mod running through piggyback or anything?

Not that I know of, the only mods I have are the LED’s.

The CANBUS will still be awake for about 10 minutes so it may just be that.  I'm not sure if it does a bulb test after switch off (to remember for next start), or after switch on.  If it does a test after switch off, the LEDs will illuminate slightly as they take such a low amount of power.  Not all bulbs are on the test on Mk3...I had a sidelight out with no warnings.  Brake bulbs are definitely checked though.

I've just changed pretty much all bulbs in my Mk3.5 Estate to Autobeam LEDs, including the brakes. I got the 380 for the rear as that was just what was on their website under my car model - that's the same for the Mk3 that you have too - and I haven't had any issues nor can I see this light faintly on. Where did you get that you needed the 382?

My TitX also has LED taillights from factory so shouldn't technically need the rear/brake unit as you say, but the halogen bulb I took out was a 21/5 bulb even though the tail portion (5w) doesn't even have wiring on the connector. It shouldn't actually matter as the extra tail light circuit just isn't there so the LED would only get an input when you press the brake pedal. I'd ask about swapping the 382 for 380 if it bothers you at all.

As a side note - jesus wept these bulbs are bright! Indicators are insanely bright.

The 380’s didn’t fit mine, that’s why I changed them to the 382’s. There’s some difference between my MK3 and your MK3.5 so wouldn’t surprise me if that was one of them.
