Anyone breaking mk2 focus, St and or 2.0tdci ??

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I've had my focus a year now, shes at 120k. Still pulls well totally standard. DSF strut is done, looking for a full clean suspension set up. Can I go ST? If so someone please talk to me. I've just priced a set of Stance at £249 front and back. I'm not 100% they dont come with top mounts but says uses your own. Anyone come across any issues with upgrading? I'm thinking powerflex upgrades too.. again any info would be much appreciated. Looking for St wheelset also 🙂

ST suspension will physically fit but won't give you the desired effect.  The 2.5t engine weighs about a tonne so front ride height would be higher with ST springs than diesel springs lol.  Spring rates would be wrong as well, though any 10 year old spring will have lost some bounce by now.

Coilovers are fine as long as you don't go too low with them.  You'll start getting arch scrub and wrecking driveshafts etc if you go too low but obviously you've got a huge range of height to choose from.  Ride comfort is usually compromised with cheap coilovers but that may not be an issue for you.  They're also not great for longevity.

The alternative is upgrade springs and shocks, ride will be better than coilovers but you can't adjust the height on them.

Lastly, I'm not sure the Stance+ kit is suitable for the estate, think it's hatch only.  They don't come with top mounts, you'll have to use your own or buy new standard ones.

For what it's worth I had both a mk2 and mk2.5,  and on both I replaced the struts with some Bilstein B4 shocks for the ST from DemonTweeks way back when, they ended up at around 65 or so all in at the time on offer.

With me already having a set of H&R -20mm lowering springs (again for an ST) to fit, the B4 are 'lowering spring friendly' as well so figured to do all in one. I ran them up until each car died a death and they were always stellar performers for me with 18" ST220 wheels, I found them less firm and 'crashy' than the 17's that were part of the Sport Pack of the time.. I can really vouch for the B4s, and the fitment was just a straight swap, both done in 4 hours with the springs, and then in also did the lower arms and links.
