Ceramic coating.

Featured Replies

Had my nephew wash my car last week, he pointed out stone chips about 5 in total on bonnet , front wings. Never driven off road or on gravel. Only had the car 8 months. Is ceramic coating worth doing at this point? I’m unable to DIY it. Is it something dealerships do?

Ceramic coating doesn't stop chips, it just stops dirt sticking to the surface.

PPF (protective film) stops light chips but even that will struggle to bounce a 70mph stone on the motorway.

Never too late to do either of the above but the paint will need to be fully decontaminated first.  Dealerships won't offer it but there are plenty of detailers about who do.

Paint on the newer Focus cars seems to be thinner/softer, my 2015 car shows the damage despite being resprayed last year. Personally I'd probably get a transparent wrap done, as that'll provide better protection than ceramic coating and cost about the same for shop to do, especially the higher end long lasting ceramic coatings. Depending on the coating, it generally bonds to the underlying clear coat which depending the car strengthens the coating but won't stop chips.  Ceramic coating is best used for show cars where you want to mitigate dirt and deepen the gloss. On a side note you can also ceramic coat the windscreen which is actually useful in the rain.

Whichever route you go, you'll need to get some chip repairs done and most professional body shop companies should be able detail and coat/wrap the car. With Ceramic coating it's a far more time consuming process because you have retouch, clean, polish, then prep the paintwork the last stage being the most time consuming. Where as with wrap you can usually get away with a retouch and clean plus it's faster to wrap a car than professional ceramic coat one. The main downside of a transparent wrap you'll lose some of the lustre in the clear coat, some newer wraps I've seen actually have some of the abilities of ceramic coating to repel dirt/water sticking to it but they're not common.
