Focus mk2 using 12v cable in boot

Featured Replies

Hi,

I’ve found a Towbar and am now working out how I go about wiring it up to the car.. I’m a complete novice when it comes to car’s electrical..

I found an old “how to guide” by Lenny, he puts an extra 12v socket in the boot of his mk2.5 and he says that there was already an orange 12v cable there, could I use this for my tow bar? I’ve had a look and I have one too.. also what do I need to buy? I believe a relay module and a canbus module?

any help would be greatly appreciated 😀

You can't use a 12v socket for a towbar.

Need to buy a proper 7pin wiring kit.  That will include all the wiring for each of the rear lights.  You can either buy a dedicated 'plug & play' kit with pre-made plugs to simply add to the Focus rear light harness, or buy a universal kit and use Scotchlocks to tap into each individual wire. The universal kit is much cheaper but more hassle.

You can't just hook it up to 12V and hope it works - the wiring needs to connect to the wiring look to make sure each trailer light comes on at the right time - indicators, brakes, tail light, and fog light.  I assume you have the electrical  wiring kit to go with the physical towbar, either generic or car specific?

Basically when I did mine I found the wiring diagram from the Haynes Manual  to get the wire colours for each type of light and used skotch-lock to tap the towbar electrical cables into each one by one.  Or you can trace the wires back from the bulb holders if you want.  Mine came with a buzzer that comes on with the indicators but I think that was just in line with those cables.   Many don't like using skotch-lock because there is a risk of a bad connection but mine has worked well with regular use for 10 years now.  It is pretty straightforward if you take your time and work logically.

Edit - crossed message with Tom but at least we are saying pretty much the same thing

I’m sorry, I didn’t word that very well, I’ve watched a video on YouTube about fitting a Towbar to a 2009 Ford Focus estate See link:-

The guy has to run a cable direct from the battery to go into the canbus module, would the spare orange cable do that job? To save me running another from the battery..?

sorry for any confusion.. I don’t know much about electrics but I do have some idea lol

many thanks
