Ford Focus MK3 Bonnet won't latch.

Featured Replies

I have this very odd problem where my bonnet won't latch closed. It latches on the safety catch but not the main one. I've tried lubricating the entire latch when that didn't work I replaced with a new one then today I changed the bonnet release cable which was a horrible job.

The only way the bonnet fully closes and latches is when I remove the spring from the latch. But then I can't open the bonnet by myself I need someone to hold the release lever while I lift the bonnet.

Any ideas on what it could be? It's almost like the bonnet doesn't have enough weight to push past the spring force and latch closed. But I don't see how that's possible as I have used all OEM parts.

Have you tried adjusting the two rubber stops on the top of the bumper and ***** them down? Sounds like they may be set too high and it’s not allowing the bonnet to latch correctly.

You can literally spin them with your hands, two black circle rubber things on either side of the latch on the bumper

I assume you are dropping the  bonnet from about 12in or so and not trying to push it shut. This as I recall was the Ford handbook method ,?

@Monks600 Yeah I tried adjusting the stops. They are fully wound in. I've even tried it with the rubber stops and it still does not latch

@Comares2001 Yeah I've been dropping it from that height as the bonnet is too soft to push shut. I'd end up denting it. I've tried really slamming it from that height too.

Shame you can’t stick your phone on record and tape it in the engine bay with the light on so you can see what’s happening when attempting to shut it

For anyone with this problem it turned out to be the bonnet release cable. Turns out the one I fitted was also broken inside the casing so had to replace with a new one haha.

Happy days! Glad it’s sorted pal
