correct smax automatic transmission service procedures

Hello..

I've just had an automatic transmission service from a main dealer which cost 300.00,now a mate at ATS stated that they couldn't do the service as it requires a machine that pumps all the old oil out of the veins of the automatic transmission therefore replacing it with all new.. when I requested what the ford garage have done,they advised just opened the sumps ,drained the oil and then replaced it...this then leaves the old stuff in the pipes....

 

Is this true or not...does anyone know what the correct procedure is.  ?,

So when doing atf on most slush boxes you can do two things. 

First, just dropping the sump and changing the filter will change around a third to half of the fluid.  This is still better than not doing anything and if done fairly regularly will give you decent fluid life.

 

It doesn't touch the fluid in the torque converter though, and for that yes you need to pull off a pipe, connect a pump and pump the oil out.  This is more complex and costs more but does get all the fluid changed at the same time.

I wouldn't say either is correct or wrong. 

 

I think too for dct and dsg type boxes you must change all the fluid and the plates which is why those services cost a bomb.

so,would you say this should be standard as if not then ALL the old oil hasnt been replaced and the dealer has only carried out half a job...any decent independent garage can carry out this procedure.

Depends what box it is, the powershift auto will be just a case of draining the oil , replacing the filter and refilling.
