Stereo power specs

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have bought a phone holder / charger for my mk2.5, which is great, but runs from a cigarette lighter adapter to a USB-C cable. It attaches onto the AC grille so there's an unsightly cable running up, getting in the way of the gearchange. I want to take power from the loom for the Ford CD600 by way of two Scotch locks on the switched live and earth. Then run the cable out and close the stereo surround on it.

The input of the charger states 5V - 3A, 9V - 2A, 12V - 2A, 15V - 8A, 20V - 1.35A.

The cigarette lighter adapter has two different outputs and there are several warnings to only use the one with a red USB, so I think it might be quite sensitive to power input.

Does anyone know what the power supply from the stereo loom will be or can recommend an alternative?

Thanks

The power coming from the radio harness will be 12v. I wouldn’t recommend taking power from the radio harness though, that could cause all sorts of interference. You’d be better using a fuse tap and tapping 12v from the fuse box for a cleaner and easier way.

Thanks mate. I thought it might be a more straightforward solution.

There are plenty of kits on ebay for fusetap to usb micro, although this phone charger uses USB-C. I think I will get fuse tap to cigarette lighter 12 socket and then plug the adapter which came with the charger into that. And then run a USB cable out from beneath the fascia round the stereo.

Thanks to everyone on this forum by the way. I have just bought my 2010 Zetec 1.8 Focus in the past month. Using this forum I have fitted my reverse sensors, hardwired dashcam and footwell lights. I had previously been leasing and couldn't touch the car, had to get all the maintenance done at a main dealer so I am really enjoying the experience of my own car to alter, and this forum is making it so much more enjoyable.

Ahhh I see what you mean now, rather than the car having a standard 2amp USB PORT. You’d want it to have a USB-C port to get the full benefit of fast charging through to your phone.

Yeah, fuse tap the cigarette lighter socket should work fine. Just had a look and no where seems to do a 12v to USB-C which I’m surprised at! Considering how common USB-C is now.

The one I’m using is a 12v to USB at 2amp and it charges my devices really quick because of the 2amp output as apposed to 1amp. Here it is for future reference:

I ordered something similar. Thanks for your help.

Hopefully with a bit more fun under the bonnet and beneath the panels, I will be able to start helping others soon.
